Abstract: Atmospheric reanalyses are widely used in studies of atmospheric processes and climate, including dynamics, chemistry, predictability, and understanding of long-term climate trends and variability. The SPARC (Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate) Reanalysis Intercomparison Project (S-RIP) is a coordinated activity to evaluate global atmospheric reanalysis products for processes in the troposphere, stratosphere, and lower mesosphere, and to establish better lines of communication between reanalysis producers and data users. In January 2022, S-RIP published its Final Report with 12 chapter. This talk will introduce the essential structure of reanalysis systems before summarizing key results and recommendations from the S-RIP report. I will also briefly outline the upcoming Phase 2 of the S-RIP activity, in which we will conduct a full investigation of ERA5 and other recently released and upcoming reanalyses. We will also begin to document and evaluate chemical/composition reanalyses and regional reanalyses where appropriate, and expand the evaluation to encompass the upper mesosphere as well as additional tropospheric diagnostics. Your interest, ideas, and participation are most welcome!
