NICOLA MASON

I started out working in clay, then paper clay, then papers (pure collage), then added paint to my repertoire. I love collecting ephemera wherever I find it and incorporating it into my work. I move pretty fluidly from one medium to the next, but usually I start a canvas--as is the case with both pieces here—by adhering torn bits of found and purchased papers to the surface and amassing layers of paper and paint, alcohol inks, and caran d'ache--obscuring and revealing until an organizing structure emerges. Sometimes what results is objective, sometimes nonobjective. It's a liberating process whereby I allow what is put down, initially willy-nilly, to speak to my more organized brain. There is both chance and intent in the end result.

NICOLA MASON is a writer, editor, visual artist, and beekeeper in Cincinnati. At present, she is launching a new small press, Acre Books (acre-books.com). More of her artwork can be found at nicolamasonart.com.
