These works are from a series of drawings/sketches completed with paint pen on found or thrifted books. For instance, the piece, YUCK, was created on a page from a book about the National Park system following the roll out of new anti-environmental policies.
MELISSA NEWMAN was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee and earned her BFA in Painting from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga in 2000. She earned an MA and MFA in Painting at the University (2003, 2004). She has taught Foundations and Painting classes at Middle Tennessee State University since 2008. She lives in Nashville with her husband, daughter, and two dogs in a house full of clutter and dog hair. She wouldn’t have it any other way. You can see more of her work at mnewman.carbonmade.com.
