Introduction to the conference:

The fourth installment of the PG_city_year conference series comes to Louisville, the city of fast horses and smooth bourbon. Recent advances in the pathoecology of P. gingivalis have also been rapid and intense, and we are delighted the world leaders in the field have assembled for this conference. We hope that you find the interactions within this community, or biofilm if you will, to be synergistic, to promote retention and to reduce stress responses. Exploration of the city and its environs by planktonic shedders is also encouraged. Welcome.

We thank our sponsors along with the UofL staff for taking care of the finances and Keith Henderson for web page construction and maintenance.

Opportunities for students/postdoctoral fellow participation The conference fee for trainees is significantly reduced and travel awards will be provided to those selected for an oral presentation based on their abstract. Furthermore, to promote high quality research, the poster presentations will be judged and the best presenters will also receive travel awards. Additionally, to inspire active participation in the sessions, a number of questions asked by trainees will be monitored and awards for taking part in discussions will also be given. Finally, social events at the conference will be designed in such way that they will foster direct interactions of trainees with seasoned scientists. Discounts, numbers and the amount of awards will depend on final funding levels. The participants are encouraged to publish proceedings from the conference in the special issue of Pathogens with a tentative title: “Virulence Factors of Periodontal Pathogens: Secretion, Function and Interaction with Host Immune Responses”.
