Lucian Rothe, PhD, is a trained secondary school teacher for English, history and German as a foreign language. He received his PhD in German (PhD minor in second language acquisition) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2020, he joined the University of Louisville as an Assistant Professor of German in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages.
His current work—at the intersection of mixed-methods research in applied linguistics and education—explores (stereotypical) perceptions of communities, approaches to engaging language programming and teacher training frameworks.
Dr. Rothe has taught a variety of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses in the United States and Germany. Additionally, he served as a mentor for novice K-12 instructors and university-level educators in both countries. He also worked for the University of Wisconsin Collaborative Language Program to support online- and hybrid-course offerings and improve state-wide collaborations between smaller departments. Dr. Rothe is currently the Reviews Editor of instructional materials for the leading journal in German language pedagogy (Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German).
In collaboration with his colleagues at UofL, he has built a growing university program that promotes a sense of community, is grounded in diversity and equity principles, and adjusts teaching practices based on consistent feedback, reflections and evaluations.
For his innovative instruction and programming efforts, he received the university-wide TILL Teaching Innovation Award in 2023 and the 2024 Diversity Champion Award from the College of Arts and Sciences. His publications on diversifying curricula earned him a prestigious international research honor—the 2024 Stephen A. Freeman Award for Best Published Article about “teaching techniques to have appeared in a professional journal during the preceding year."
Dr. Lucian Rothe is delighted to serve as a Delphi Center Faculty Affiliate in Fall 2024, and we are excited to have him at the Delphi Center! He is looking forward to sharing his experiences and facilitating conversations among educators from all fields and other university stakeholders to enhance the educational experience on campus.
What’s Involved Faculty Affiliates are expected to dedicate approximately 5 hours per week to their work with the Delphi Center per semester. Responsibilities may include:

EligibilityIf you’re passionate about education and want to contribute to our mission, we encourage you to apply for our upcoming spring 2025 positions.All tenure-track and term faculty contracted to teach in 2024-25 at the time of application are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who have taught at UofL for at least three years. We encourage you to check back in August for the spring 2025 application information.
Faculty affiliates will be eligible for salary recovery for workload reallocation or a stipend for their work for us.
Applicants must have their unit administrator (department chair, dean) notify us that they are supportive of the faculty member serving in this role. Unit administrators must approve any salary recovery or workload reallocation if a teaching reassignment is involved. All applicants should ask their unit administrator to signal their support by sharing a link to the form that is embedded in the application. Note that a faculty member’s unit will receive funds to cover costs associated with workload reallocation up to $3500.
