“The Lecture is Dead! Long Live the Lecture!” Towards Learner-Centered Lecturing
The lecture has been around for a long time, and rumors of its demise are greatly exaggerated. However, lecturing as often practiced fails to take into account what we now know about how learning works best. Whether you are a “sage on the stage” or a “guide on the side,” lecture can be an effective tool for learning, especially when combined with interactive elements designed to enhance your students’ memory and recall.
As a result of attending this session, you will be able to:
- Identify the key purposes of lecture and determine when they are most appropriate to use;
- Explore best practices for developing and delivering content via lectures; and
- Share examples of active learning techniques designed to enhance learning during lectures.

Roy Fuller, Ph.D., is the part-time faculty fellow at the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Fuller brings to the Delphi Center over twenty years of teaching experience at numerous institutions, including his ongoing teaching for UofL in the Division of Humanities where he offers courses in Religious Studies.
