Matthew Cave highlights CIEHS research in LPM interview on Calvert City emissions
Matthew Cave, CIEHS Deputy Director, was recently featured in a Louisville Public Media article discussing a new community-based environmental health study led by CIEHS in partnership with Murray State University. In the interview, Cave explained how concerns from Calvert City residents about potential health risks from nearby chemical plants prompted the team to launch an exposure assessment focused on substances such as ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride, and benzene. He emphasized that while long-term cancer outcomes take years to assess, researchers can use biomarkers from blood, urine, and wildlife to detect early signs of exposure. The article also highlighted CIEHS’s commitment to transparent community engagement, including a recent town hall in Grand Rivers where researchers shared plans and addressed public questions.
