Community meeting highlights hyperscale data center and related gas power plant expansion concerns in Southwest Louisville

On Monday, July 28, the Louisville Metro Watchdog Alliance hosted an informational meeting at the Southwest Regional Library to address growing concerns about a proposed hyperscale data center development and related gas power plant expansion in Southwest Louisville. The event drew local residents, community groups, and environmental advocates, including Rubbertown Emergency Action (REACT) and the Louisville Climate Action Network.

CIEHS member David Hein, UofL professor of pharmacology and toxicology, was a featured speaker at the meeting. He highlighted potential human health risks associated with fossil fuel power sources. He stated that despite years of progress reducing air pollution from the electric power sector, fossil fuel power plants remain a leading source of air pollution. Proposed expansions of fossil fuel powered sources and hyperscale data centers should require proactive safety and public health-related regulations including mandatory human health impact assessments.
