Andrew Mehring and Nathan Earl turn global research opportunity into publication
Andrew Mehring, assistant professor of biology, and Nathan Earl, biology graduate student, Department of Biology in the College of Arts & Sciences, published research in Environmental Science and Technology entitled, “Black and White Fire Ash Alters Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Temporarily Reverses Carbon Source-Sink Status in Aquatic Mesocosms,” which focused on how wildfire ash impacts greenhouse gas emissions in aquatic systems. Conducted at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, their study found that white ash can reduce carbon dioxide but increase methane emissions. Earl says the experience helped him embrace his identity as a scientist. Mehring encourages students to pursue international research opportunities, which offer valuable insights and help shape global perspectives on climate and water systems.
