Every year, thousands of students and faculty come to the writing center (or hold an appointment online) to talk about not just improving a piece of writing, but how they might use writing to better learn, collaborate, and stay one step ahead of all of the things they need to get done.
We're located on the first floor of Ekstrom Library for in-person appointments, but you can also sign up for online appointments or have a writing consultant provide feedback on a written draft. During in-person appointments, writers work one-on-one with an experienced writing consultant for all kinds of reasons: adjusting to new standards for writing, learning new strategies for content creation and editing, understanding writing assignments and feedback, working on focus and study habits, talking through a difficult idea, avoiding procrastination, you name it.
Appointments are just one part of what we do. We collaborate with organization both at UofL and in the community to provide writing-related workshops and programming. We are an active research site studying how writing is changing and what that means for us all.
Instructors: Help us help you! Put us on your syllabus!
If you have any writing assignments in your course, we’d love to work with your students. Even if you don’t have writing, we’d be delighted if you would tell your students about our services. Here is some language that you might put in your syllabus:
The University Writing Center can help you with every stage of writing your papers for this course. They can help you to brainstorm about your subject, organize your ideas, develop your editing skills, make writing feel less intimidating, or keep you accountable if you tend to procrastinate.
You can schedule appointments to meet in-person, on Teams, or have them provide written feedback on a draft; appointments last up to 50 minutes.
