Welcome to the Department of Urology at the University of Louisville. As the newest department at the School of Medicine, we are excited about the future.  We received full accreditation from the Residency Review Committee of the ACGME for our new Urology Residency in December 2008 and accepted our first residents in the July of 2009.  We are currently focused on adding to our faculty in order to build on our outstanding educational programs for residents and medical students and to provide outstanding urologic care for patients across the lifespan -- from children to the elderly and everyone in between.

We are both honored and excited to welcome Murali K. Ankem, MD, MCh, FACS as Professor and Chairman of the University of Louisville Department of Urology as well as Program Director of the Department of Urology Residency Program.  Dr. Ankem previously served as Director of Endourology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School-UMDNJ in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He received his medical degree from the Rangaraya Medical College, Andhra University, India.  He completed his four-year urology residency at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, two-year general surgery residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center, Darby, Pennsylvania and a one-year fellowship in endourology at The University of Wisconsin in Madison. He has published more than 30 papers, abstracts and book chapters relating to urologic surgery. Dr. Ankem is a member of numerous professional and scientific societies such as the American Urological Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Endourological Society and the Society for University Urologists. Dr. Ankem specializes in minimally invasive approaches for urinary stone disease, laparoscopic surgery for kidney, adrenal disorders and prostate cancer. He has special interests in the management of male erectile dysfunction.

We are thrilled to have an outstanding faculty of physicians and dedicated staff on board and look forward to serving our colleagues, patients, students and alumni as we enhance our educational, clinical and research missions.
