The University of Louisville Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences seeks to recruit outstanding students with a high sense of professionalism and compassion, a strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity, creativity and self reflectiveness. Excellence in residency education is the department's priority. Our goal is to graduate residents with outstanding clinical skills, knowledge and experience to advance the field of psychiatry and become leaders in the profession.

Residency Program Overview

The University of Louisville General Psychiatry Residency Program is a dynamic program offering a broad array of closely supervised clinical experiences paired with talented faculty poised to provide our residents with the knowledge and skills to become outstanding board certified adult psychiatrists.  Strongly invested in providing the depth and breadth of knowledge necessary to gain clinical excellence, our residents gain a extensive and in depth foundation in both pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Excellence in education is the core value to our General Psychiatry Residency Program.  Whether in formal didactics, journal clubs, rounding, or curbside discussions, our commitment to learning is clear. Excellence in clinical supervision is the core of our program, and supplementary supervision is available when requested.

In 2007, a track system was instituted to provide additional structure and opportunity for those interested in academic or community psychiatry.  Also, with a wide array of research actively taking place in the department, residents learn from those contributing knowledge on the cutting edge of psychiatry.  As testament to the excellence of our faculty and residents, many regularly serve at the regional and national level in professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association.  Because we highly value the benefits of professional networking, we encourage residents to attend national conferences, work with faculty on research projects and publishing, and participate in professional organization sponsored fellowship programs.

Our residents work and are supervised by full time faculty in psychiatric care in the academic clinical system, the private sector, the Veteran’s Administration system, the local community mental health system, and state hospital.  Because of this diversity of training settings, we have been highly successful in training residents to gain the skill and expertise needed to work in any setting they choose.

With our strong commitment to educational excellence, paired with Southern and Midwestern hospitality and charm, the University of Louisville is an exciting place to train and call home.  For more information about our program, and for application information, please review the other sections of the Web site.
