Research Description:

Dr. Joh has been working on developing cancer therapy for human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced cancers, which make up 5% of all solid tissue cancers, in collaboration with Drs. Alfred B. Jenson and Shinje Ghim who are co-inventors of HPV prophylactic vaccine (Cervical cancer vaccine). Although HPV prophylactic vaccines (Gardasil and Cervarix) are highly successful, development of a therapeutic vaccine or targeted treatment of 5% of cancers caused by HPV has never been successful.

Dr. Joh has recently developed an animal model (MmuPV1) for the HPV cancers, in which T lymphocyte-mediated tumor regression undergoes. Notably, he takes advantage of studying tumor specific antigens on benign and malignant tumors in order to identify the therapeutic targets of antitumor T cell immunity. His study will fill a gap of knowledge in the papillomavirus field to develop an effective therapeutic vaccine for HPV cancer patients.
