Dr. Wiegman retired from the full-time faculty in 2015, but maintains a moderate level of activity at the School of Medicine
For over 30 years, Dr. Wiegman and his professional staff of 90 (including 12 assistant/associate deans) were responsible for the academic programs (including accreditation, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, student affairs, counseling, curriculum, standardized patients, human simulation, faculty affairs, rural and minority affairs, regional campuses, international programs, and affirmative action) of the School of Medicine and for coordination of the academic programs of the Health Sciences Center (Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health). Dr. Wiegman was the recipient of a Commonwealth of Kentucky Grant focused on rural medicine through the Trover Campus Program with a total value of almost $16,000,000. He was also the recipient (2009-11) of a $941,000 stimulus grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to create a broadcast center for medical education throughout the state. In addition, he was the co-recipient of two Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grants for medical education ($500,000). Dr. Wiegman's educational research interests included comparative international medical education, curriculum development, and the assessment of educational outcomes.
At an earlier time in his career, Dr. Wiegman was a full-time scientist with research interests in the microcirculation, hypertension, and exercise physiology, He was Principal Investigator/Co-Investigator on ten research grants funded at a total of about $1,000,000. Between science and education, Dr. Wiegman has authored/coauthored 135 publications including 43 full-length papers and sections of two medical textbooks.
Currently, Dr. Wiegman serves on the School of Medicine Admission Committee, remains active in the GEMS program, and gives a limited number of lectures.
It is important to note that even in retirement, Dr. Wiegman continues to make time for meeting with and counseling/advising undergraduate, graduate and professional students and also faculty at all levels in their efforts for educational and career development and advancement.
