The cytopathology fellowship program is integrated with the general pathology residency program at the primary training institution (University of Louisville Hospital). The integrated components include daily didactic sessions, journal clubs, special topic lectures in anatomic and clinical pathology and autopsy conferences. Surgical pathology specimens, which have a cytologic component, are signed out conjointly with the residents signing out on a given day in order to enhance cytologic/histologic correlation. Special rotations in the special procedures laboratory, flow cytometry laboratory and molecular pathology laboratory are modified to meet the needs of the fellow. The fellow will perform ancillary techniques in the frozen section room or on the surgical bench by preparing touch preparations of specimens and/or fine needle aspirations of specimens. The fellow may also perform similar tasks in the autopsy suite.
