WinterFest 2014: January 6 - 20

The Office of First Year Initiatives and our campus partners would like to welcome all of our new and returning students to campus!

To make sure you don’t get caught up in the winter BLUES, we’ve compiled a great list of events to get the semester started off right.


Schedule of Events

Monday, January 6

WinterFest Welcome & Info Station
9am-5pm (SAC 1st Floor)
Get your WinterFest event guide, ask any questions you have, grab a FREE drink, and find out about important campus resources, and more!

Free Group Fitness at the SRC
Various Times (Student Rec Center)
Come join the fun, get fit, and socialize with group fitness classes at the SRC. Check out Group Cycling, Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, Boot Camp, and more! Classes are FREE to students at the SRC and offered every day through Friday, April 18th. More info and class times:

The Mr. Bettie Contest
7:30-8:30pm (Bettie Johnson Hall)
This event showcases student athletes’  talent to raise awareness for Kosair Children’s Hospital. Have some fun and contribute to a great cause! 

Tuesday, January 7

Good Morning Commuter
Every Tues., 8:30-10am (Red Barn)
Mingle with fellow commuters as you enjoy FREE coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts every Tuesday!
WinterFest Welcome & Info Station

REACH Welcome Back
10:30am-2:30pm (Strickler Lobby)
Start your semester out right with FREE snacks and drinks, and learn about REACH resources and how they can help you excel as a student.

Nutrition Navigator Booth
12-1pm (Ville Grill)
Stop by to schedule an individual appointment, ask a nutrition question, take a lap around the food choice track, or spin the wheel for a prize!
ReFuel Kickoff with Chick-fil-a
6-8pm (Baptist Campus Ministries [BCM])
Kick off the spring semester with a FREE Chick-fil-a dinner to the first 100 attendees.Christian worship service starts at 7pm. 

Wednesday, January 8

REACH Welcome Back
10:30am-2:30pm (Strickler Lobby)

Promoting Health & PEACC in the New Year
12-4pm (Student Svcs. Annex)
Drop by the Open House for FREE healthy snacks, warm up with hot chocolate, and participate in activities while learning more about Health Promotion and PEACC.

Health Promotion Volunteer Involvement
12:30-1pm (Student Svcs. Annex)
Interested in health topics like fitness, nutrition, stress management, and more? Want to help your peers? Stop by to enjoy FREE food and learn more!
Thursday, January 9 

Every Thurs., 6-8pm (BCM)
Are you a freshman looking to belong and grow in your faith? Stop by for FREE food, games, and a Bible study.

The Gathering Campus Ministry
Every Thurs., 6:30-8:30pm (Interfaith Center)
Come for FREE dinner and fellowship, followed by worship. The Gathering is a Christian ministry open to anyone.

Laser Zeppelin

Kick off the new year by rocking out to songs by Led Zeppelin while laser images pulsate across the dome! Plays every Fri. thru Jan. 31.

Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity
3-3:45pm (Rauch Planetarium)

Audiences are dazzled with striking animations of the formation of the early universe, star birth and death, and a simulated flight in a black hole. Plays every Sat. thru Jan. 25.

The Root Mobile - Local Food Farm Stand

Interfraternity Council Recruitment

Card-Fit Challenge

Intramural Sports Fitness Department and Health Promotion present Card-Fit Challenge Round 2!

LGBT Center’s Monday Mixer

Meat & Potatoes: Starting Over
7:30-8:30pm (The Avenue)
Men, kick off the semester with the M&P panel with special guest Mike Rutherford from the Card Chronicle. Join us for FREE hot wings and even hotter topics!

Tuesday, January 14

ReFuel is a weekly worship service offered by Baptist Campus Ministries to anyone looking to grow in their faith or explore Christianity.
Cards on Ice
Yellow Parking Lot behind Bettie Johnson(6-10pm)
Get your ice skates ready and come join the UofL Student Activities Board and the Office of First Year Initiatives to kick off the new semester with Cards on Ice! Strap on FREE rental skates and reconnect with your friends while skating on the first-ever campus ice skating rink. The event will also feature Snowzilla, an outdoor tubing experience, horse-drawn carriage rides, fire pits to warm up next to, FREE food and drinks, and a live DJ!

Wednesday, January 15

Ekstrom Learning Commons Cider & Donuts

Come grab a bite to eat and meet representatives from three Learning Commons partners who can help you succeed! 

WinterFest RSO Fair
11am-1pm (SAC Multi-Purpose Room)
Still exploring what UofL has to offer? Bring your lunch to the SAC MPR and meet diverse and vibrant Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs)!
PEACC Volunteer Training
12-1pm (PEACC Office, Student Svcs. Annex)
If you’re interested in learning more about being a volunteer with us, stop by for a one hour training and get everything you need to get started!

Conversation Cafe: What the Best College Students Do
12-1pm (Cultural Center MPR)
What do the best college students do? Join Book-in-Common and Porter Society for FREE lunch and a chance to find out how to get the most out of your college experience!

NuLu Night on the Town
7-9:30pm (Local Speed Art Museum)
Hit the town with your friends! Join First Year Initiatives and the Speed Art Museum for a night on the town in NuLu. Enjoy FREE dinner from Taco Punk, check out the new art exhibit, and create your own masterpiece in “Mixology: A Multi-Media Collage Experience." Buses will leave campus at 7. Thursday, January 16

Modern Day Slavery: Breaking the Chains
6-8pm (Red Barn)
Join the Women’s Center in raising awareness about sex and labor trafficking around the world, and in our hometown of Louisville. Listen to speakers including Theresa Flores, a trafficking survivor, and enjoy FREE dinner  catered by Lynette Newby.

MLK Day of Service
9:30am-3:30pm (SAC Multi-Purpose Room)
Make it a day on, not a day off! Students university-wide will be bussed to locations in the greater Louisville area to complete service projects with community resource centers. Info and registration:
