Seminars & Lectures
Graduate Student Seminars
Student Seminars are a graduate level requirement that affords students the opportunity to perfect and demonstrate their research as well as organization, writing, and presentation skills.
Faculty Seminars
Knowledge is garnered in many ways and from many sources. The chemistry faculty invite colleagues from other institutions, domestic and international, to present information on their respective research.
Derby Lectures
Each year, the Chemistry Graduate Student Association invites a prominent chemist (often, a Nobel Laureate) to the department as part of our Distinguished Lecture Series, known informally as the Derby Lectures. These lectures have acquired some cachet in the Chemistry community and contribute to departmental esprit de corps.
George R. Pack Graduate Student Award Symposium
Each year, the Department of Chemistry gives an award to one of our graduate students from the previous year for the best PhD dissertation in honor of our former Chair George Pack. The student is invited back to the department to present a seminar and we give out the George R. Pack Award and other graduate student awards. We have a reception before the symposium and the family of George Pack also attend the event. It is a great way to honor George while recognizing the great accomplishments of our graduate students.
