      Noteworthy programs based on national recognition, uniqueness or other criteria. (Limit three):

      • The music ensemble programs of the School of Music have been designated by UofL as one of the university’sprograms of national excellence.
      • The Grawemeyer Players faculty chamber music ensemble specializes in the study and performance of chamber works by composers who have won the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.  The Players made their debut performance in Carnegie Hall in March, 2010.
      • An area of emphasis for the school has been in the development of international connections through music.  Collaborative programs in Russia, Brazil, Poland, and Australia have been developed and music students and faculty from UofL have performed in South Korea, China, Spain, Germany, Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Costa Rica.
      • The piano program is completing an initiative to achieve “All-Steinway School” status, one of less than 150 music schools internationally to be so designated.

      Community Service:

        • The School of Music supports Suzuki Violin programs at Atkinson and Sanders Elementary Schools in the Louisville area and has programs in percussion and Suzuki Violin at Neighborhood House in the Portland region of the city.
        • The Jazz In The Schools jazz combo provides concerts and presentation on jazz in the elementary schools of Louisville and southern Indiana.
        • The School of Music is home to the Dance Academy and the Community Music program.  Both programs provide music and dance study for pre-collegiate students and community members.
        • The school is one of the cultural cornerstones of the community and presents dozens of concerts for the community each year from its resident artist faculty, guest artists and student ensembles.  Additionally, the school annually hosts events from the Chamber Music Society of Louisville, the Kentucky Center Chamber Players, and Speed Museum Music Series.

        Prominent alumni recognized recently:

        • James Walker (flute) and Terry Cravens (trombone) are both faculty members at the University of Southern California and former members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.  Both have been designated by the university as Alumni Fellows.

        The School of Music is one of the cultural cornerstones of the region as well as a principal source of trained musicians for the music education, composition, therapy, and music performance communities in Kentucky.
