  • Success story is JB Atkinson Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; elementary student achievement is up teacher retention is up, student absenteeism and suspensions are down; Atkinson has become a model for other SPI schools, locally and nationally.  Teacher candidates who are prepared at Atkinson have high placement rates for employment in JCPS.  University courses are taught side-by-side at Atkinson.
  • Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium
  • The planetarium’s educational programming is aligned with space science core curriculum standards. Over 3,200 JCPS students and 445 teachers have visited the planetarium during Fiscal Year 2010-2011.
  • Center for Learning Excellence
  • In 2010, the CEHD was selected to be one of three sites for the Center for Learning Excellence which was established by the Kentucky Department of Education. Their primary service focus will be schools identified as Tier I or II for School Improvement Grants (SIG) and other schools in the JCPS and Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative (OVEC) service region identified as in need of assistance by the KDE.
  • OVEC Partnership
  • The CEHD has partnered with OVEC (Ohio Valley Education Cooperative) to serve the OVEC P-16 Council which is focused on improving educational attainment by enhancing instruction for students, and offering professional development for all OVEC educators. In 2010, the Council assisted in closing the Achievement Gap; provided support for beginning principals; improved instruction in middle/high school mathematics, and adolescent literacy.
  • Technical Support in Classroom Teaching and Learning
  • The CEHD is home to the largest podcast server in the state which is part of a service learning project. The server is available to all Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) schools and CEHD faculty. Each school and faculty member are given their own space on the server to post classroom work/instruction materials, and promotional or news items about their schools or programs.

  • Summer 2010 Scholarships  - $69,544; 110 Applicants; 70 Awarded
  • Fall 2010 Scholarships - $205,286; 337 Applicants Total; 182 Awarded
  • Spring 2011 Scholarships - $198,431; 263 Applicants Total; 183 Awarded
  • Samuels Family Scholarship Fund – established for CEHD doctoral students
  • International Teaching Experience - designed for teacher education, school counseling, and higher education majors; students participate in an international work experience. 2011 pilot program included 13 teacher education, 2 school counseling, and 2 higher education administration students who spent 12 days in Belize, Central America. Program will be an annual event.

The College of Education and Human Development is dedicated to creating skilled educators who will prepare students for the challenges awaiting them throughout the 21st century. We intend to continue our advancement of the science of education and the satisfaction of learning based on real-world experience.
