The Department of Mathematics at the University of Louisville is located in the Natural Science Building on the main (Belknap) campus in the heart of Louisville.
The principal missions of The Department of Mathematics are to teach mathematics and perform research in the mathematical sciences. The Department also provides professional mathematical services to other University units as well as local and regional groups.
Faculty & Staff
The Mathematics Department has over twenty full-time permanent faculty members, all holding a doctorate in their field, and several visiting faculty. Additionally, the Department is fortunate to have a very cordial and very competent staff to support its faculty and student population.
Teaching
The Mathematics Department is dedicated to providing a high quality mathematics education for both majors and non-majors alike. To this end, The Department has designed a variety of undergraduate courses and graduate courses to meet the needs and desires of today's students.
Degrees Awarded
The Department of Mathematics offers two undergraduate degree programs as well as minors.
The department also offers a Master of Arts in Mathematics and a Ph.D. degree in Applied and Industrial Mathematics. This new Ph.D. program prepares mathematicians with a blend of advanced mathematical and statistical knowledge, together with experience applying that knowledge. The department also offers study in Actuarial Science as well as a dual Dual Ph.D. in Applied and Industrial Mathematics and Master of Science in Biostatistics-Decision Science.
Research
The Mathematics Department maintains a strong research program in both basic and applied mathematics. Faculty research interests are broad. The Department also hosts occasional research seminars, workshops, and conferences that attract mathematical experts from around the world.
Undergraduate Degree Programs
The Department of Mathematics offers two undergraduate degree programs, Mathematics (BA) and Mathematics (BS), as well as minors.
Graduate Degrees
The Department offers a Master of Arts in Mathematics and a Ph.D. degree in Applied and Industrial Mathematics. This new Ph.D. program prepares mathematicians with a blend of advanced mathematical and statistical knowledge, together with experience applying that knowledge.
Seminars and Colloquia
Weekly seminars in many areas of mathematics are offered during the semester. The Department also sponsors a colloquium series featuring visitors as well as local faculty. In addition, the Department hosts a small number of special talks directed at a general audience, featuring internationally known experts from mathematics, economics, finance and related fields.
Equipment
The Department has three computer laboratories. Two large labs, equipped with Macintosh computers, are used in many introductory courses. The smaller advanced computer lab, equipped with state of the art PC and Macintosh computers, is used for upper level courses.
Co-op Program
After two years, students who meet the College of Arts and Sciences GPA requirement, become eligible to participate in the Department’s Co-op program, which enables students to work outside the University for academic credit.
Competitions
Faculty members hold special problem seminars for undergraduates, preparing them for the William Lowell Putnam and for the Virginia Tech annual competitions in mathematics.
Math Club
The math club is sponsored by the Department and run by both undergraduate and graduate students. It holds weekly meetings to discuss mathematics, classes, career opportunities etc. Special events are arranged for Mathematics Awareness Week each April.
