Report of the Faculty Athletics Representative

Dear Senators,

The Committee on Academic Performance of the ULAA Board (CAP) held its initial meeting on 18 August, at which time we discussed coordination of the various ACC academic initiatives that involve students and faculty at U of L (as well as affinity groups such as registrars, provosts, financial aid officers).  The Senior Woman Administrator, Christine Herring, reported on the new hires in sports nutrition and therapy as well as sports psychology and social work.  Christine Simatacolos, Associate AD for Student Life, shared a copy of the senior interview questionnaire that is being used to help student-athletes make informed choices about careers, graduate education, and life-after-sports.

As FAR, over the summer months,  I conducted the NCAA Coaches Recruiting Exam (as well as a quiz on U of L  policies and points of pride) for all of our coaches—and met with each of our teams at its first compliance team meeting, to encourage academic perseverance, perspicacity, and excellence, despite the heavy demands on their time.  I will be attending the meeting of the D1A FARs in Dallas later this month and the meeting of the ACC FARs, ADs,  and Senior Woman Administrators in Tallahassee at FSU in October.

As the new semester begins, I share with you the final draft of the academic highlights achieved by our student-athletes during 2014-2015 (attached).  These are indeed remarkable, and are a tribute to our student-athletes as well as to Marvin Mitchell and his team of counselors and staff in the Olga Peers Academic Center!
