Using Reinforcement Strategies to Improve Behavior for Children with Autism in All Environments

Laura Ferguson, M.Ed., BCBA

We often think that we are using reinforcement strategies because we are providing students, children, or clients with items or activities. These tangibles cannot be considered reinforcement unless the consequence increases the probability that a behavior will occur in the future, or at least be maintained.  The ultimate goal of reinforcement is to help learners with ASD learn new skills and maintain their use over time in a variety of settings with many different individuals. Therefore, it is very important that teachers, parents, and other professionals identify the appropriate reinforcers that will motivate individuals. During this webinar we will take a look at reinforcement, and strategies on how to determine effective reinforcers for individuals on the autism spectrum.

When the demand to transition is placed escape behaviors increase. Often it becomes difficult to transition from activities and reinforcers, so parents and professionals attempt to limit these transitions. During this webinar we take a look at strategies that are effective when increasing those transitions throughout the day for individuals with autism.
