University Housing Areas of Refuge

The following locations within each residence hall have been identified by the University of Louisville Fire Marshal as places that individuals who are unable to evacuate the building independently may go to wait for emergency personnel's assistance with exiting the building in an emergency.

Belknap Village North

At the elevator lobby on each floor above the first floor where the emergency communication system is in place. These are marked and easily identifiable. Use this system to contact our Communications Center directly. DO NOT use the elevator. If the hallway on your floor is charged with smoke, and you feel you are unable to make it to the elevator lobby, remain in your room and call our Communications Center at 502-852-6111 or 911 and advise them of your location and situation.

Belknap Village South

Bettie Johnson Hall

Inside the central west hallway stairwell and the southeast corner stairwell near the elevator. DO NOT use the elevator. The landings in these areas will accommodate persons with mobility impairments and are rated assemblies providing additional protection. If the hallway on your floor is charged with smoke, and you feel you are unable to make it to the stairwell, remain in your room and call our Communications Center at 502-852-6111 or 911 and advise them of your location and situation.

Billy Minardi Hall

Inside the South stairwell. DO NOT use the elevator. The landing in this area will accommodate persons with mobility impairments and is a rated assembly providing additional protection. If the hallway on your floor is charged with smoke, and you feel you are unable to make it to the stairwell, remain in your room and call our Communications Center at 502-852-6111 or 911 and advise them of your location and situation.

Cardinal Towne Phase I

Inside the stairwell near the elevators at both the Northwest corner and Southeast corner of the building on each level above the first floor. DO NOT use the elevators. There is signage indicating Area of Rescue Assistance outside these stairwells, and there is an emergency call box located inside the stairwell on each landing. This does NOT call in to the campus Communications Center. The landings in these areas will accommodate persons with mobility impairments and are rated assemblies providing additional protection. If the hallway on your floor is charged with smoke, and you feel you are unable to make it to the stairwell, remain in your room and call our Communications Center at 502-852-6111 or 911 and advise them of your location and situation.

Cardinal Towne Phase II

Inside stairwell 1 near the elevators at the Southwest corner of the building on each level above the first floor. DO NOT use the elevators. Denny Crum Apartments

Kurz Hall

Inside the Northeast or Southeast stairwell on each level above the first floor. DO NOT use the elevators. The landings in these areas will accommodate persons with mobility impairments and are rated assemblies providing additional protection. If the hallway on your floor is charged with smoke, and you feel you are unable to make it to the stairwell, remain in your room and call our Communications Center at 502-852-6111 or 911 and advise them of your location and situation.

Louisville Hall

At the East elevator lobby on each floor above the first floor. DO NOT use the elevator. Stairwells do not have large enough landings to accommodate wheelchairs while still permitting safe passage of others in process of evacuating. If the hallway on your floor is charged with smoke, remain in your room and call our Communications Center at 502-852-6111 or 911 and advise them of your location and situation.

Unitas Tower

At the elevator lobby on each floor above the first floor and in the basement. DO NOT use the elevator. Stairwells do not have large enough landings to accommodate wheelchairs while still permitting safe passage of others in process of evacuating. If the hallway on your floor is charged with smoke, remain in your room and call our Communications Center at 502-852-6111 or 911 and advise them of your location and situation.

University Pointe Apartments

At the main elevator lobby (northeast corner) on each floor above the first floor. DO NOT use the elevator. The egress corridors in this facility are open to the outside air, thus hopefully limiting smoke accumulation due to natural ventilation. The travel distance from the southern portion of the facility to the elevator is somewhat lengthy, but this would be the quickest access point for responders. If you feel you are unable to make it to the elevator lobby, remain in your room and call our Communications Center at 502-852-6111 or 911 and advise them of your location and situation.
