Pediatric Dentistry Residency
The ULSD Pediatric Dental Residency Program has three residency positions open each year for a 24-month combined certificate and masters degree program, offered to USA citizens and one position offered to an International applicant. The program is a school-based program with close association with Norton Children’s Hospital.
Emergency call at Norton's Emergency Department is covered 24/7 by the Pediatric Dental Residents and most rotations occur there as well. Norton Children’s Hospital is the only exclusively pediatric hospital in the state of Kentucky.
The graduates of Pediatric Dental Residency Program are in successful practices, in academics, and research. They have evidence-based knowledge of “best practices” in all areas of pediatric dentistry from infant oral health to trauma and hospital dentistry.

The residents treat patients in the UofL Pediatric Dental Clinic and at the Kosair Charities Pediatric Center on Eastern Parkway. Rotations include:
- Anesthesia at Norton Children’s Out Patient Surgery – 5 weeks
- Sedation Clinic at Norton Children’s Hospital – 2 weeks
- Emergency Dept. at Norton Children’s – 2 weeks
- Haematology-Oncology – 1 afternoon per month
The didactic portion of the curriculum provides in-depth information in:
- Growth and development
- Current restorative care
- Interceptive orthodontic care
- Pharmacology
- Statistics-Research methodology
- Anatomy
- Oral biology/research methods
- Microbiology
- Immunology
- Genetics
- Pathology
Research projects are required. This research project must result in a presentation at the Kentucky Dental Association and/or the AAPD annual meetings, as well as a publishable paper.
The program starts July 1.
Future Residents
The University of Louisville Pediatric Dental Residency has four residency positions per year, for a 24-month combined Masters/Certificate program. Three GME funded positions are offered to USA citizens or permanent residents who are graduates from CODA accredited Dental Schools. The program also offers one residency position to an International dentist who graduated from a CODA equivalent Dental school.
This program is a school-based program with close association with Norton Children’s Hospital. The residents obtain clinical experience in their clinic at the University of Louisville Dental School and rotate through the UofL Pediatric Dental Clinic at the Kosair Charities Building at 982 Eastern Parkway, 40217.

Our curriculum follows the ADA accreditation guidelines to have fully prepared graduates to successfully pass the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry written and oral exams.

Application process:
Applications are accepted through PASS (link – ADEA.org). Deadline for applications is September 1st. The Pediatric Dental Residency Program also participates in the MATCH program for the final selection of residents.
Applicant Requirements
For the three GME funded residency positions
• US citizens or permanent residents
• Applicants must hold a DMD or DDS degree from an ADA accredited dental school
International applicants
• Applicants must hold a DMD or DDS degree from a non ADA accredited dental school | |
• Applicants must have successfully passed NBDE Part I and II. | |
• All applicants for whom English is a second language must take the iBT TOEFL examination (or equivalent) to provide evidence of proficiency in written and spoken English. Applications for the examination may be obtained from Test of English as a Foreign Language, Education Testing Service, Princeton, NJ 08540. Register for the test here. |
New residents should have the following by July 1 of the admission year:
- Kentucky Dental License (Limited License is satisfactory)
- ADA Membership
- Textbooks:
- McDonald, Avery, Dean; Dentistry for Children & Adolescents
- Profit; Contemporary Orthodontics
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support training (PALS) (to be obtained within the 1st month of admission)

Tuition and Fees
- No tuition is charged.
- A Program Fee of $7,000 per year is assessed by ULSD for every graduate student.
Stipend
- Stipend of $40,000 per year is paid to residents.
