Ophthalmology receives grant from national organization
A national science group has awarded a grant of $110,000 to UofL’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences to support research into the causes, treatment and prevention of diseases that cause blindness.
The funding, provided by Research to Prevent Blindness, will support work in such areas as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, hereditary retinal degeneration, glaucoma and dry-eye syndrome.
"This funding from Research to Prevent Blindness, in conjunction with support from other agencies and philanthropic gifts, will contribute to important advances in our understanding of these problems and potential therapeutic breakthroughs," said Henry J. Kaplan, M.D., UofL's Evans Professor of Ophthalmology and chairman of the ophthalmology department.
Kaplan will will direct the research.
Research to Prevent Blindness has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars to medical institutions throughout the United States since it was founded in 1960. To date, UofL has received more than $3 million from the organization.
