Welcome from Dr. Roman

Welcome to the Department of Medicine, a part of the University of Louisville School of Medicine, which was established in 1837.

Jesse Roman, MD

Jesse Roman, M.D.
Chairman, Dept. of Medicine

Since the post World War II era, full-time faculty in the department have devoted their efforts towards the training and mentoring of young physicians, the generation of new knowledge through research and technology, and the delivery of care through patient-centered practices.

Today, the DOM houses over 200 faculty and several accredited training programs. Its faculty and trainees work at four distinct hospitals including the University of Louisville Hospital (which houses a Level 1 trauma center), the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and affiliate systems including the Jewish & St. Mary's Hospital and Norton Hospital, both located on the same Louisville Medical Center campus.

The DOM research program rivals the most innovative centers in the country. Its programs include world class research in stem cell biology, nutrition, hepatology, respiratory disorders like acute lung injury and fibrosis, pneumonia and N1H1 infection, diabetes, renal disease, and cancer. Its researchers are housed in close to 100,000 square feet of research space including labs and other high tech facilities. Here, patients have access to the latest treatment strategies through carefully designed clinical trials. Hundreds of manuscripts and patents are generated each year through these innovative biomedical research endeavors currently funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, industry and private foundations.

Our educational enterprise houses two accredited internal medicine training programs (Internal Medicine Residency and Med-Peds Residency) as well as post-doctoral clinical and research fellowships in 10 subspecialists. The trainees are exposed to a rich and diverse in-patient experience at four different hospitals as well as outpatient experiences at multiple locations. They are also exposed to clinical and basic science research under the skillful supervision of physician scientists and clinical investigators. The program generates young and passionate physicians that ultimately seek careers in academia and other venues.

In addition to their work at the hospitals mentioned above, our faculty deliver care in several outpatient facilities including the new Healthcare Outpatient Center, a $40 million state-of-the-art facility that allows for integrated multidisciplinary care through sophisticated clinical research programs of excellence devoted to the delivery of primary care medicine and the management of the most complex medical disorders.

Armed with new facilities and decades of experience, our dedicated faculty, trainees and staff have developed one of the most sophisticated educational, research and clinical programs in the region. In this strong research-oriented academic enterprise, patients come first and lives are saved every day.

Thus, the University of Louisville Department of Medicine has come to age and is well positioned to establish itself as one of the premier academic programs in the country. We thank our partners in other departments and affiliated organizations, and the leadership teams at the School of Medicine who have welcomed and supported a fast-paced comprehensive strategy that will build on the current foundation to mentor the next generation of world-class physicians, accelerate discovery through innovative research, and provide the best care to patients through a clinical enterprise second to none.

I am proud to serve this department, impressed with the caliber of its people, and excited to be surrounded by some of the best clinicians, educators, and researchers I know; role models who are leading the way to the next phase in American medical education, biomedical research and health care.
