Custom Firewalls Overview
Information Technology can now provide customized firewalls for your sensitive resources. This extra level of security is available for research, mission critical, HIPAA or other sensitive data that requires protection from network traffic within the university. There is a one-time set up charge of $390 and an annual recurring charge (CAR) of $182.
The first two phases of the firewall project have been implemented for the security of university enterprise systems and the campus network. These phases look at the network traffic that travels from the Internet to the university. Custom firewalls will look at the traffic that travels within the university's network and will protect the computers behind them from other computers at U of L.
If your department has sensitive data, resources that need protection or should only be seen by designated people then you may want to consider a custom firewall. You should consider the resources you want to protect, from whom you are protecting them, and who needs to access the resources before contacting IT. Once you determine the areas needing protection you will work with IT to build a firewall rule set and complete the installation.
Wireless computers and mobile IPs should not be included in the list of computers behind a custom firewall. While the university wireless network is secured by encryption, you will not receive the same IP address when you log in. There are more secure ways for wireless devices to access those resources.
