UofL.net Remote Acceptable Usage Guidelines and Limitations
- The primary usage of the Service should be for activities associated with
your relationship to the University of Louisville (e.g., in support of
instruction, research, service and professional activities related to your
relationship with UofL.) If you have questions about whether or not a particular
usage is appropriate, consult your supervisor or department/unit head, faculty
advisor (if a student), or Computer Security and Account Management within
Information Technology. What is appropriate for one individual or category of
subscriber may differ from another individual or category of subscriber, based
on the particular facts and circumstances.
- Legitimate use of the Service does not extend to whatever an individual is
capable of doing with it. Although some rules/parameters are built into the
Service and associated computer account(s), these restrictions cannot limit
completely what an individual can do or can see. You are responsible for your
actions, whether the rules/parameters are built in, and whether or not they can
be circumvented.
- Subscribers are expected to exhibit principles of behavior which show
respect for the finite capacity of computers and network systems by limiting use
so as not to interfere unreasonably with the activity of other subscribers.
Violations could include, but are not limited to: (1) knowingly tampering with,
obstructing, or impairing the availability of resources used to provide this
Service or attempting to do so; (2) knowingly sending a crippling number of
messages/files around a network (e.g., SPAM, chain letters, pyramid schemes);
(3) introducing damaging, self-propagating or otherwise harmful software (or
files) into a machine or a network; or (4) hoarding computer or network
resources in such a way as to interfere with the operation of the
system/Service.
- Subscribers are expected to follow policies, rules, or procedures
established to manage this Service and associated resources, including those
established to control access to, or the use of, computer data, files, or other
similar information. Violations could include, but are not limited to: (1)
knowingly tampering with, obstructing, or impairing the availability of
resources used to provide this Service or attempting to do so; (2) supplying
false or misleading information or identification in order to access the Service
or associated resources or attempting to do so; (3) repeatedly trying to log
onto the Service or a computer account that you are not authorized to use; (4)
sending E-mail, messages, or files as pranks or in a threatening or harassing
manner.
- Subscribers are expected to refrain from harassment (targeting an individual
or entity with the intent to cause distress, embarrassment, unwanted attention,
or other discomfort). You may have a disagreement with someone's point of view
but personal attacks or harassment is not an appropriate use of this Service.
Student subscribers should reference Student Code of Conduct Section 7.a, 7.t
and 7.bb for additional details.
Additional guidelines/limitations may be added in the future based on usage
experience, questions, and encountered abuses. An E-mail notice to current
subscribers' Preferred E-mail Address (PEA) will announce
additions/revisions.
