Setting up Dial-up using ULNET Phone Number

Dial-Up UofL.net Remote:

You must have a UofL.net (PPP) account, know your UofL.net (PPP) Userid and Password.

Call-Waiting - If you have the call-waiting feature at home, disable it before starting a data session. You can insert *70, before the phone number (852-6020) to disable this phone system feature.


Windows XP Users

These instructions represent an installation from start to finish. Your machine might already have some of these options installed. Please skip those sections accordingly.

1) Install your particular modem

2) Start the Network Connection Wizard

(a) Press "START"
(b) Click-on "Control Panel"
(c) Double-Click on the "Network and Internet Connections" ICON. If networking was not previously installed, you will now be prompted to install all networking from scratch.
(d) Double-Click the Icon labeled "Create a connection to the network at your workplace"
(e) Click-on "Next"
(f) At the connection name box enter ULNET"
(g) Click-on "Next"
(h) At the Phone number box enter 8526020 don’t forget to enter *70 if you have call winting on this phone line
(i) Click-on "Next"
(j) Check the  box add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop
(k) Click-on "Finish"


Windows 2000 Users

These instructions represent an installation from start to finish. Your machine might already have some of these options installed. Please skip those sections accordingly.

1) Install your particular modem

2) Start the Network Connection Wizard

(a) Press "START"
(b) Click-on "SETTINGS"
(c) Click-on "Control Panel"
(d) Double-Click on the "Network and Dialup Connection" ICON. If networking was not previously installed, you will now be prompted to install all networking from scratch.
(e) Double-Click the Icon labeled "Make New Conection"
(f) Click-on "Next"
(g) Select "Dial-Up to my private network"
(h) Click-on "Next"
(i) Select the modem or port you wish to use connect
(j) Click-on "Next"
(k) Enter the Ul.net Remote phone # (8526020)
(l) Click-on "Next"
(m) Instruct the wizard whether to make this profile globally or locally available.
(n) Click-on "Next"
(o) Name the profile (I prefer "connect to UofL.net Remote")
(p) Insert CD or diskettes as appropriate and reboot



Windows NT 4.0 Users

These instructions represent an installation from start to finish. Your machine might already have some of these options installed. Please skip those sections accordingly.

1) Install networking software:

(a) Click-On the "START" button
(b) Click-On "SETTINGS"
(c) Click-On "Control Panel"
(d) Double-Click on "Network". This will start the "Network Setup Wizard"
(e) Choose only "Remote access to the network:"
(f) Click-On "Next" to bypass the "Network Adapter Search" screen
(g) Choose only the protocol "TCP/IP Protocol" from the "Network Protocol" screen
(h) Ensure "Remote Access Service" is highlighted on the "Review" screen
(i) Insert Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM/Diskettes as prompted
(j) Choose "YES" to use the "USE DHCP" option
(k) Select your modem from the "ADD RAS Device" screen. If you have a very common Modem, let the Install Wizard choose it for you; otherwise find your modem from the list.
(l) Select "NEXT" to start the remote network
(m) Insert a Computer Name to identify your machine on the network
(n) Insert the name "UofL" as your dialup workgroup
(o) Click-On "FINISH"
(p) Allow the Setup Wizard to reboot your machine

2)  Setup Dial-up Networking

(a) Double-Click on "My Computer"
(b) Double-Click on "Dial-Up Networking"
(c) Click-On "NEW"
(d) Add "UofL.net Remote Access" as a new phonebook entry
(e) Check "I am calling the Internet" and "Send my plain text password if that is the only way to connect"
(f) Enter the remote access phone number (852-6020)
(g) Click-On "Finish"

3)  How to use dial-up networking in Windows NT 4.0

(a) Click-On "Dial" to dial the new service
(b) Under "Username" insert your UofL.net remote access logon id (type-case sensitive)
(c) Under "Password" insert your UofL.net remote accesss password (type-case sensitive)
(d) Leave "Domain" blank and Click-On "OK" to dial
(e) An "Authenticated" message will verify that you have properly logged onto the network
(f) You may now run any of the Ulnet v4.2 applications

4) How to disconnect (hang-up) in Windows NT 4.0:

(a) Right-Click on the icon you created in step 2(d)
(b) Click-On "Hangup"


Windows 95/98/ME Users

These instructions represent an installation from start to finish. Your machine might already have some of these options installed. Please skip those sections accordingly.

1) Install your particular modem

(a) Click-On the "START" button
(b) Click-On "SETTINGS"
(c) Click-On "Control Panel"
(d) Double-Click on "Modems". If you have a very common modem, let the Install Wizard choose it for you; otherwise find your modem from the list.
(e) Click-On "FINISH"
(f) Highlight the modem and select "Properties"
(g) Under the "GENERAL" tab, ensure that the Baud Rate is appropriate for your modem
(h) Single-Click on "OK" to return to the "Modem Properties" screen
(i) Single-Click on "OK" to finish the modem installation

At this point, Setup Wizard might prompt for the Win95/98 install CD or diskettes and then ask to reboot, select "NO".

2) Install and configure Dial-Up Adapters

(a) Click-On the "START" button
(b) Click-On "SETTINGS"
(c) Click-On "Control Panel"
(d) Double-Click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon
(e) Click-On "Windows Setup" tab
(f) Double-Click on the "Communications" icon
(g) Check the box labeled "Dial-Up Networking"
(h) Click-On "OK" to close the "Communications" window
(i) Click-On "OK" to close the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" window

At this point, Setup Wizard might prompt for the Win95/98 install CD or diskettes.

(j) Close the "Control Panel" window
(k) Double-Click on the "My Computer" icon
(l) Double-Click on the "Dial-Up Networking" icon
(m) Choose "Make a new Connection" (if it does not automatically start)

At this point, the Setup Wizard will ask you to type a name for the COMPUTER that you will be dialing. I chose "UofL.net Remote Dialup".

(n) Under select a modem, ensure that this reflects the modem you installed from step 1
(o) Insert the modem pool number 852-6020
(p) Click-On "NEXT"
(q) Click-On "FINISH"

3) Add TCP/IP. (not necessary for Windows 98)

(a) Click-On the "START" button
(b) Click-On "SETTINGS"
(c) Click-On "Control Panel"
(d) Double-Click on the "Network" icon. Under the Dial-Up Adapter, look for the protocol "TCP/IP". If it is not there, make sure that the "DIAL-UP ADAPTER" is highlighted
(d1) Click on "ADD"
(d2) Click on "PROTOCOL"
(d3) Click on "MICROSOFT"
(d4) Click on "TCP/IP". This will then return you to the "Network" screen
(e) Click on "OK" to exit "Network Setup"
(f) Insert CD or diskettes as appropriate and reboot

You are now ready to run any Ulnet v4.2 application.

4) How to use dial-up networking in Win 95/98:

(a) Select "My Computer"
(b) Select "Dial-Up Networking"
(c) Double-Click on the icon you created for "UofL.net Remote Access"
(d) Insert your UofL.net username and password. (these are type-case sensitive)
(e) Click on "Connect"

 At this point, Win95/98 will dial and connect to the Remote Dialup Pool. After the "Connected" screen comes up, you may start any Ulnet v4.2 Application.

5) How to disconnect (hang-up) in Windows 95/98:

(a) Depress and continue holding the <ALT> key while pressing the <TAB> key until the window labeled "Connected to UofL.net Remote Access" appears
(b) Release the <ALT> key
(c) Click-On the button labeled "Disconnect" to close your session
