ULnet users start
here:
- You must have a PPP account, know your PPP Userid and Password
- You must have either MacTCP or Open Transport
installed.MacTCP and Open Transport are provided with the minimal supported OS versions. If neither are currently installed, you will be required to load them from your source OS media before installation.
These instructions represent an installation from start to finish. Your machine might already have some of these options installed. Please skip those sections accordingly.
- Install Your Particular Modem.
- Ensure that your external modem is connected into the "PHONE" port on your
machine.
- Ensure that your external modem is connected into the "PHONE" port on your

- Install FreePPP.
- Open the "FreePPP" folder.
- Run the "FreePPP" installer.
- Allow the "FreePPP" installer to reboot your
machine.
Skip to (4) if you are using Open Transport - Open the "FreePPP" folder.
- Configure MacTCP.
- Click-On the small phone icon next to the balloon help icon in the upper
right corner of your desktop.
- Select "Open FREEPPP Setup."
- Press the button labeled "Open MacTCP."
- Ensure that "FreePPP" is highlighted and press the "More"
button.
This screen will be divided into 4 separate boxes, follow these steps in order.
- From Obtain Address Box:
Select "Manually."
- From Routing Information Box:
Insert the value 0.0.0.0 under "Gateway Address."
- From Obtain Address Box:
Select "Server."
- From IP Address Box:
Select "Class" and choose "B."
Move the "Subnet Mask Marker" to the right until the value "255.255.255.0" appears.
- From Domain Name Server Information Box:
Type: louisville.edu under the field labeled "Domain."
Type: 136.165.253.10 under the field labeled "IP Address."
- Click-On the circle under "Default."
- Press the button labeled "OK" to exit this screen.
- Click on the close box in the upper-right corner to close "Mac-TCP
Setup."
- Click-On the small phone icon next to the balloon help icon in the upper
right corner of your desktop.
- Configure Open Transport.
- Click-On the small phone icon next to the balloon help icon in the upper
right corner of your desktop.
- Select "Open FREEPPP Setup."
- Press the button labeled "Open TCP/IP."
- Under "Connect via:", ensure that "FreePPP" is selected.
- Under "Configure:", ensure that "Using PPP Server" is selected.
- Under "Name Server addr:" insert the value 136.165.253.10
- Click on the close box in the upper-right corner to close "TCP/IP
Setup."
- Click-On the small phone icon next to the balloon help icon in the upper
right corner of your desktop.
You should now be ready to run FreePPP.
If you need to add call-waiting bypass, insert *70, before the dialup number. Once FreePPP connects, you will be prompted for your account information. Remember this information is case-sensitive, enter it carefully.
If your machine seems to hang when you invoke the dialer, cycle the power on your modem and try again. This is a reported problem that should be resolved soon. For more information, consult the Bug Report file. Once connected, you will be able to run any of the Ulnet v1.0 applications. - Install Your Particular Modem.
