• MODEM: Purchase a hardware modem, not a "Win" or software modem. If the modem requires an operating system, it is a software modem. Software modems rely heavily on your operating system to do their work, which can adversely affect the operation of other processes on your computer.

  Upgrade your modem with the latest "flash" updates. Modem manufacturers frequently offer flash updates to improve performance. These upgrades are usually available for download from your modem's manufacturer on the World Wide Web. Check with your modem manufacturer for details.
