Virus Fix Instructions

Customers who are disconnected from on-campus Internet Services

Typically, the University of Louisville will disconnect your internet service if your computer is port scanning due to virus infection. The following procedure should be followed if you have been disconnected.

  • Contact the HelpDesk at 852-7997 to report your outage.  Provide the HelpDesk with your MAC address.
  • Do not move your machine to another port, as this will cause that port to be disconnected.
  • The HelpDesk will either direct you on how to fix your machine or you will be contacted.
  • Determine which virus your machine has, first by:

Uninstalling all previous versions of "other" virus protection and then installing the University's version of Symantec Antivirus.

This can be done by purchasing a copy of the Virus Fix CD (ULink password required). This CD contains all the latest virus removal tools, Symantec Antivirus Client installation with current def file, and several critical Windows patches needed to be reconnected. Also dorm residents can check with their RA/RD for a loaner copy of this software (copies should be dated and the more current the copy the more effective it will be at detecting your infection).

Using the University's version of Symantec Antivirus along with a current def file and run a scan (CD instructions #1 & 2) will allow you to determine which virus you have and therefore how to handle it's removal.  You can also go to Symantec's web page and do a search on the virus found, the knowledge base article will tell you how to remove the virus found and may include a removal tool.
