PC Clean Up Check List
For Virus Infected Machines
Reformatting a machine in order to meet the necessary requirement for reconnection can be done one of two ways:
- Reinstalling the Operating System leaving none of the former files or software left behind. When using this method you should back up all only the most important files on the machine. Keeping all the stored data could result in a re-infection of your machine.
- Using the manufacturers “system restore”, to restore the system back to the state it was in when it shipped to you.
Note: Any other method will not be acceptable and may result in a delayed re-connection of internet services.
- You have installed the University’s version
of Symantec Antivirus from the Virus Fix CD (SAVCAMPUS.EXE).
- You have verified that you have updated
your virus def file date with the Virus Fix CD. This is the second file on the
Virus Fix CD. To verify the update is installed you can double click on the
Yellow Shield near your desktop clock or open the program through the program
list under the “Start” menu. Look just to the left of the “Live Update” button
for a date, this date should match the date on the CD you purchased or the name
of the second file on the Virus Fix CD.
- You have verified that you have installed
the appropriate Windows patches from the Virus Fix CD and have re-booted your
machine after their installation was complete. Failure to re-boot the machine
may result in further virus infections, as the machine will not recognize that
the patches are installed until this is done.
- You have set up Automatic Windows Updates
on your machine so that you are prompted when new critical Windows Updates are
available.
- As soon as you are reconnected you should
go to Windows Update and scan for Updates, you should install all the “critical”
updates listed, then scan and install all the Office Updates from the URL above.
- Spybot is a free program that will remove Adware programs installed on your machine these programs are
attached to web pages. Adware programs often will
cause your machine to behave like a machine that is infected with a virus. When
you are reconnected download the program and the updates and then run the
"Search and Destroy" feature about once a week to get rid of these programs.
Always remember to check for updates before scanning, this program works like
virus protection and will only detect problems if it's updated. This program
will also help you to remove problems associated with web page pop-up ads (Spybot Search and Distroy).
- Always
remember to scan any disks used in the on-campus labs or
libraries.
- The use of file sharing programs like
KAZAA, are known to infect your machine, as well as making you vulnerable to
hackers. Do not install programs that indicate that they are used for file
sharing.
- Leaving your machine turned off when not in
use, will reduce your chances of becoming infected again. Even under the best of
circumstances machines can become infected again.
- You will need to do the regular
weekly/monthly maintenance on your machine that is necessary and mandatory,
(Windows Updates and verification of virus def file updates). You should check
for new Microsoft Updates both Office and Windows every month. Anytime you see
critical updates for any Microsoft product including your browser Internet
Explorer (IE), or Outlook, you should install them immediately. Even if you do
not use these products they are installed on your machine by default and it is
necessary that you patch them accordingly.
- If in the future should your internet services quit working you should first contact the IT HelpDesk at 852-7997 to verify the cause, and not move your machine to other Ethernet ports.
Dorm Residents Only:
- Do not to allow other students or visitors to your dorm room use your Ethernet connection or your computer. You are ultimately responsible for all PC activity preformed on your machine.
