IT to Implement New Spam Filtering Solution on 12/27 - December 2006

Beginning December 27 Information Technology will implement an improved spam filtering solution to replace the university’s existing spam filtering solutions and reduce unwanted email. The new solution — piloted for 30 days in response to overwhelming feedback regarding increasing spam — will impact all university email accounts, including student email accounts.

How does it work?

The solution, a partnership between Sprint and the University of Louisville, will quarantine suspect mail outside of UofL systems to prevent overload of individual email boxes and university email resources. You will be able to view, salvage, and delete spam messages. You may also report any mail that is incorrectly classified as spam, though this happens rarely.

Any mail in the spam quarantine which has not been acted upon will be automatically deleted after 15 days.

What do I need to do?

Your spam will be automatically filtered. You will however want to check the spam quarantine to ensure that no legitimate messages have been incorrectly reported as spam.

To ensure that you are able to check filtered mail you will need to complete the following steps:

  • Review the technical documentation and setup instructions at: louisville.edu/it/spam
  • Logon to the Sprint Quarantine using each of your university email addresses and/or accounts.
  • Logon to the Sprint Quarantine with the temporary passwords provided by spam@louisville.edu
  • Setup multiple login so that you may view spam quarantined for all of your addresses and/or accounts at one time.

Note: Mail will not be quarantined until December 27, 2006. Your spam quarantine will show zero messages stored or may be temporarily unavailable until December 27, 2006.
