Message from the Vice President
Welcome to the Information Technology (IT) website. IT provides a full range of services for students, faculty, and staff that keep the University of Louisville at the forefront of innovation.
IT is your technology partner, responsible for providing tomorrow's cutting-edge products and services today. We’re committed to providing the tools necessary to help you be successful. We will be taking several steps during the next year to help us reach our goal:
- Build relationships and improve communications with faculty, staff and students
- Incorporate voice of customer feedback
- Improve service and offerings
- Improve security
You'll have a chance to see IT in action as we conduct regular meetings with students, faculty, staff, deans, and constituent groups to gauge what we can do to better serve you. In addition to improved security, service and product offerings, you can count on IT to continue building on our strengths and aligning the organization to better meet your needs. Here’s a look at just some of IT’s newest initiatives designed to serve you better:
Provide simple service management – There’s no need to know department names or specific individuals to get IT help. You’ll have three simple choices to reach IT:
Help Desk Web Support: www.louisville.edu/it/helpdesk

Emergency Notification Sytems - Information Technology will implement a three-phase notification plan designed to allow the University to disseminate emergency notifications within seconds of an emergency via several vehicles: text, SMS, and email messaging, audible and visual alerts via VoIP phones, paging via IP devices such as indoor and outdoor speaker systems. As early as October 1, 2007 text message and email alerts will be available to students, faculty and staff via an opt-in notification system. IT will also be able to deliver audible and visual alerts to approximately 9000 campus VoIP telephones regardless of university location.
Expand IT store - In August 2007, IT launched iTech Xpress— a retail store for technology products, software, hardware, and peripherals as well as a suite of services such as copying, faxing, etc. Several opportunities exist to expand iTech Xpress so that it further meets the needs of students, faculty, and staff. Plans are underway to expand services to include discount computer purchasing programs with popular manufacturers; service, repair and warranty fulfillment; and expanded help desk services.
Kenutucky Regional Optical Network (RON) - - Information Technology has taken a leadership role in the development of a Regional Optical Network (RON) that will serve education and research across the state of Kentucky. UofL is a connector to the Internet2 network, and Louisville is fortunate to be one of only 25 nodes in the U.S. that connect directly to the Internet2 network backbone. This high-performance network connectivity gives faculty, staff, and students opportunities to access unique resources and applications, engage in collaboration, and compete for research grants.
