The Commonwealth Center for Humanities and Society was established in 1997 with the support of the President and the Board of Trustees. With an ambitious mandate to create a faculty forward center for humanistic scholarship and intellectual inquiry at the University of Louisville, CCHS contributes to planning and development across the departments of A&S.
Above all, CCHS serves the interests of an intellectually curious and engaged university community. It promotes a vital humanistic foundation of interdisciplinary research and learning by bridging divides between disciplines. By jump starting a wide range of high profile events, programs and projects that draw on faculty expertise, the Center fosters the networks of inquiry, dialogue, reflection, collaboration and research that shapes the lives of our students and connects humanistic learning and public life at UofL with the larger community and society.
The ideas and ideals of the university are profoundly rooted in the humanistic disciplines. They provide the common language of the university and our intellectual lives, the forms of inquiry, expertise, and creativity that bind us together and help us engage, teach and inspire one another. As the new Director, I am proud of the distinguished record of the CCHS and excited to launch a new phase in its future.
