A Call to Community

"A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other's lives. It is the knowledge that people have of each other, their concern for each other, their trust in each other, the freedom with which they come and go among themselves." ~ Wendell Berry, The Long Legged House (1969)

About Us

The Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society (CCHS) offers a variety of programs, some focused internally on faculty research, but many designed to appeal to the public and to help make the University a cultural center for the city and the Commonwealth.

CCHS is one of six Humanities Centers worldwide to be awarded a Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes grant, which we will use to establish the first consortium of humanities centers and departments across Kentucky’s public universities. Upcoming Events

Join us for a special pre-concert talk, presented by UofL’s Commonwealth Center for Humanities and Society, as part of the Music Without Borders concert on Thursday, October 3, from 6:15 to 6:45 PM at the Jeffersonian. Comparative Humanities professor Dr. Hilaria Cruz and Louisville Orchestra Creators Corps Composer Oswald Nguyen will dive into the dynamic relationship between language and music. Dr. Cruz, a specialist in Mexico's indigenous Chatino language, and Oswald, a Vietnamese speaker, will highlight how linguistic tones parallel musical patterns.
