UofL graduate Lance Gibson has received the 2019 Mary Churchill Humphrey Scholarship. The prize is awarded by the College of Arts and Sciences. Gibson will use the award to pursue graduate studies at the University of Manchester in England. Gibson previously studied at the University of Edinburgh as a Critical Language Scholar. He also received an Etscorn International Summer Research Award from UofL.

“I am honored, though a bit shocked, to have received the 2019 Mary Churchill Humphrey Scholarship – an award usually reserved for postgraduate students and experienced alumni, not graduating seniors. I had intended to save myself the trouble of applying until a few members of faculty and staff persuaded me to put forward my candidacy. I look forward to representing Louisville and my hometown of Henderson, Kentucky in Manchester."

Inspired By

I am fortunate to have worked with a number of excellent faculty and staff during my time at UofL. I would like to thank Professors Thomas Stewart Jr. (Linguistics), Khaldoun Almousily (Arabic), and Mathieu Dalle (French) for their excellent and enthusiastic instruction; Drs. Glynis Ridley and Dale Billingsley (English) for their unwavering support and valuable contributions regarding higher education in the United Kingdom; Drs. Bethany Smith and Charlie Leonard (National and International Scholarships) for their application assistance through the years; and Dr. Bronwyn Williams, Christopher Stuck, and the entirety of the University Writing Center staff for their commitment to the ‘ongoing, life-long process of learning to write’ that has been invaluable to me since my first day at UofL. This achievement is due, in large part, to the tireless effort of these individuals toward my personal development and the development of their respective programs.
