Shelby Pumphrey

Assistant Professor

Shelby Pumphrey is an interdisciplinary scholar in Africana Studies, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and History. Her research is at the intersections of Africana women's history, mental and spiritual wellness, and reproductive justice. She earned a dual PhD in African American and African Studies (AAAS) and History from Michigan State University. Her current project focuses on the nation's first mental hospital established to care for African American people, Central Lunatic Asylum for the Colored Insane (Petersburg, Virginia). Dr. Pumphrey holds a dual appointment in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Pan-African Studies at the University of Louisville.
