The September 16th death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iran’s morality police, ostensibly for not wearing her hijab correctly, has ignited widespread protests in Iran and beyond. Social media posts show women defiantly cutting their hair and burning their hijabs while chanting “Women, Life, Freedom.” They have faced a fierce response from the police. The rising death toll among the persistent protesters makes clear the current turmoil signifies far more than a revolt against government-enforced dress code; indeed, such protests indicate intense pressures for social, political and economic changes. Come learn more or share your knowledge about Iran’s unrest and what it means for those of us here at UofL. The panelists include: Dr. Maryam Moazzen (Department of Comparative Humanities), Dr. Cathryn Johnson (Department of Political Science), Golnoush Esmaeily (President of Iranian Student Organization), Amirkhosro Kazemi (Postdoctoral Research Associate), and Dr. Mary P Sheridan (CCHS Director and moderator). |
