2014-2015 Academic Highlights
- Athletic Directors Honor Roll: 3.0 GPA or higher for the semester.
- Fall 2014: 376 of 588 student-athletes (376 is an all-time high)
- Fall 2014: 189 members of our spirit groups, managers, trainers and pep bands
- Spring 2015: 338 of 542 student-athletes
- 276 student-athletes were named Red and Black Scholar Athletes (3.25 cumulative GPA or better). This is a record number. Another 131 members of the spirit groups, managers, trainers and pep band earned this honor as well.
- 15 of 19 teams had a 3.0 or higher in the Fall 2014 semester and 16 of 19 teams were above a 3.0 in the Spring 2015 semester. This marks nine straight semesters the total semester GPA has been above a 3.0.
- 53 current or former student-athletes graduated in the Fall 2014 semester and nearly 100 more graduated in the Spring 2015 semester.
- Men's basketball, men's cross country, women's golf and softball teams are among the top 10 percent in their respective sports in the latest APR, which measures academic eligibility, retention and graduation for student-athletes. All four sports programs have a perfect 1000 score for the most recent four-year period from 2010-14.
- Fifteen teams posted a perfect score in the most recent single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) data. The 15 UofL sports -- nine women's and six men's -- with a perfect 1000 APR score for the most recent 2013-14 figures consist of baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, softball, women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, men's indoor track and volleyball. All 23 UofL sports teams -- including 10 men's and 13 women's sports -- have a four-year APR score above 960, well above the minimum of 930 when penalties are assessed.
- Women's golf received the NCAA Public Recognition for the third-consecutive year for ranking in the top-10 percent of the sport based on the most recent multi-year APR. It is the fifth-straight year the team has produced a perfect 1000 APR score to rank among the nation's top programs.
- The University of Louisville completed its inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 285 student-athletes named to the 59th annual ACC Honor Roll, recognizing academic excellence during the 2014-15 academic year. The Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year.
- Six athletes were named to the 2015 Indoor Track and Field All-ACC Academic Team. Dolly Nyemah and Bre'Yana Wash made the women's academic team while Calvin Arsenault, Edwin Kibichiy, Marcus Motill and Brad Vivace made the men's academic team. Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career.
- Seven track and field student-athletes were named to the All-ACC Outdoor Track and Field Academic Team. On the women’s side, Benadate Cheruiyot, Chanel Krause, Linda Mutter, Dolly Nyemah, and Bre'Yana Wash earned honors. Edwin Kibichiy and Brad Vivace earned the honors on the men’s side.
- Six runners earned spots on the 2014 All-ACC Academic Cross Country Team. On the women's side, Emily Bushey and Benadate Cheruiyot earned the honor, while Edwin Kibichiy, Ernest Kibet, Japhet Kipkoech, and Jonathan Reynolds were named to the men's side.
- Runners Edwin Kibichiy and Ernest Kibet were both named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honorees. Each USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree must hold a 3.25 grade-point average or higher and finish in the top 10 percent of the student-athlete's regional meet.
- Three players, Joachim Ball, Daniel Keller and Tim Kubel, were named to the 2014 All-ACC Men’s Soccer Academic Team.
- Men’s Soccer player Joachim Ball was selected as a Capital One Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He was named a second team Academic All-America honoree.
- Ryan Johnson and Jake Smith were named to the 2014 ACC All-Academic Football Team.
- Katie George, Janelle Jenkins and Maggie DeJong were named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team.
- All-American Kelsi Worrell was named the 2015 ACC Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. Abigail Chin, Andrea Cottrell, Andrea Kneppers, and Emily Stalmack joined Worrell on the 2015 All-ACC Academic Women's Swimming & Diving Team.
- American record-holder and NCAA Champion Kelsi Worrell was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American District 2 first team and to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's At-Large Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
- Six athletes were named to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Men's Swimming & Diving Team. Addison Bray, Trevor Carroll, Rudy Edelen, Josh Quallen, Grigory Tarasevich and Aaron Young all received this honor.
- Three athletes were named to the 2015 All-ACC Women’s Basketball Academic Team. Sara Hammond, Myisha Hines-Allen, and Mariya Moore each earned the distinction, making Louisville one of only two schools in the conference with three student-athletes on the 20-member team.
- Seven students have been named to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball team. Earning the honor were Wayne Blackshear, Montrezl Harrell, Anton Gill, Mangok Mathiang, Chinanu Onuaku, Terry Rozier and Quentin Snider. The seven selections was a league-high on the 21-member team.
- Men's Basketball senior Wayne Blackshear was named a second team Capital One Academic All-America® Division I basketball teams by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Earlier in the year, he was initially named to the Capital One District 2 Academic All-District men's basketball first team.
- Cortnee Daley and Hannah Koloski were named to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Women's Lacrosse Team.
- For the 5th straight year, the lacrosse team was recognized by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as an IWLCA Division I Academic Squad. In addition, Cat Gordon was named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll.
- Five students earned spots on the 2015 All-ACC Academic Softball Team. Maryssa Becker, Bridgette Flaherty, Kelsi Jones, Sidney Melton and Brittany Sims earned the honors for the Cardinals.
- Kyle Funkhouser, Nick Solak, Devin Hairston and Lincoln Henzman were named to the All-ACC Baseball Academic Team.
- Five student-athletes were named to the All-ACC Women’s Golf Academic Team. Louisville’s honorees include Emily Haas, Katie Mitchell, Louise Oxner, Katie Petrino, and Laura Restrepo.
- Emily Haas, Katie Petrino, Laura Restrepo, and Louise Oxner were named Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars. The team also earned the All-Scholar Team award which recognizes the top 25 women’s collegiate golf programs with the highest collective average team GPA.
- Robin Sciot-Siegrist and J.D. Lehman were named to the All-ACC Men’s Golf Academic Team.
- Three men's golfers were named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars. Antoine LeSaux, Robin Sciot-Siegrist and Gus Lundquist were honored.
- Darya Marchanka and Katie Nord were named to the 2015 All-ACC Rowing Academic Team.
- The Women's Tennis team was named as an ITA All-Academic Team and Ola Mally was named as an ITA Scholar Athlete.
- Sebastian Stiefelmeyer was named the 2015 ACC Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year. Stiefelmeyer, the 2014 USTA/ITA All-American Singles Champion, was also named the national ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner. He is joined by teammates Albert Wagner and Alex Gornet on the 2015 All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team.
- Grant Donovan (Football), Katie George (Women's Volleyball), Erin Yenney (Women's Soccer) and Andrew Stewart (Men's Cross Country) were selected as ACC Post Graduate Scholarship recipients. Louisville was tied for the most selections in the ACC with four and George was selected to speak on behalf of the student athletes at the ACC Post Graduate Scholarship Luncheon
- Seven students earned 2014 All-ACC Academic Field Hockey Team honors. Seniors Rebecca Maddock, Paige Monsen and Alyssa Voelmle joined junior Elisa Garcia, sophomores Lotta Kahlert and Shannon Sloss and freshman Nicole Woods on the squad.
- The Field Hockey team was named to the 2014 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Team Award list. In addition, Lotta Kahlert was named a 2014 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Scholar of Distinction. This marks the second straight year Kahlert has earned the honor which recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2014-15 season.
- Shawnta’ Dyer (Women’s Basketball) and Kylen Patterman (Rowing) were selected to participate in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum.
- Maggie Gilbertson (Women’s Track and Field) and Rebecca Maddock (Field Hockey) were selected as the 2015 Cardinal Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.
- University of Louisville student-athletes continue to achieve academically at a high level, success which is reflected in recent national graduation rates released by the NCAA.U of L student-athletes achieved an 80 percent graduation rate in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Report, which was developed 11 years ago to account for transfers into the university who graduate and those who leave in good academic standing. The Cardinals' GSR, most recently reported for freshmen and transfers who entered 2004-05 through the 2007-08 academic year, has risen 14 percent since the reporting began 10 years ago. Seven sports -- women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming and men's tennis -- attained a GSR at 90 percent or above in the most recent report. Over the last 11 years, graduation rates for U of L student-athletes have risen 17 percent, improving from 48 percent for the freshman class which entered U of L in 1997-98 to a 65 percent graduation rate in the most recent 2007-08 figures. U of L student-athletes graduate at a 10 percent higher rate than the overall university student population in the 2004-05 through 2007-08 four-class average. All UofL student-athletes combined to produce an average grade point average of 3.0 or better for each of the last nine semesters.
