About Muriel Maurer
Muriel Maurer was awarded her B.A. in Chemistry (American Chemical Society certified) from Goucher College in 1987 and also became a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Virginia in 1993 under the direction of Dr. Charles Grisham (Chemistry) and Dr. Julianne Sando (Pharmacology). From 1992-1995, Dr. Maurer was an NIH Post-Doctoral Fellow at Cornell University with Dr. Harold Scheraga. She continued two additional years of research at Cornell. She joined the Chemistry Department at the University of Louisville in 1997 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2003. In Fall 2007, Dr. Maurer served as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Leeds Institute of Genetics, Health, and Therapeutics (LIGHT), University of Leeds, UK. Her sabbatical hosts for this research semester included Dr. Robert Ariëns, Dr. Helen Philippou, and Dr. Peter Grant. In 2008, Dr. Maurer was promoted to Full Professor at the University of Louisville. Dr. Maurer served as Vice-Chair of the Chemistry Department from 2012 to 2015 and again for 2019-2020.
Dr. Maurer's research interests are in protein chemistry, protein structure-function, and blood coagulation. She is a member of the University of Louisville Institute of Molecular Diversity and Drug Design (IMD3), the American Chemical Society, the Biophysical Society, the Protein Society, the International Fibrinogen Research Society, and the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). Dr. Maurer was a charter member of the NIH Hemostasis (HT) Study Section (2005-2009). She was a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of the journal Biophysical Chemistry (2004-2018). She served as Co-Chair of the Fibrinogen and Factor XIII Scientific Standardization Committee (2006-2011). Dr. Maurer was a Councillor for the International Fibrinogen Research Society for the term 2019-2023.
