Attend a Workshop

The University of Louisville provides two opportunities for suicide prevention trainings to groups of faculty, staff, and/or students: QPR and It’s Real. Either workshop typically lasts one-and-a-half hours, and can be offered virtually when necessary, but are meant ideally for in-person training. Either workshop offers the opportunity for discussion between participants and trainer(s). Please request a workshop at least 4 weeks in advance of your preferred date. QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.

This in-person training enhances the participant’s knowledge, awareness, empathic listening skills, communication skills concerning college student suicide, and the ability to compassionately and directly ask students about suicidal thoughts.

As a QPR-trained participant you will learn to:

  • Recognize the warning signs of suicide
  • Know how to offer hope
  • Know how to get help and save a life

It’s Real: The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)-produced film It’s Real: College Students and Mental Health is designed to raise awareness about mental health issues commonly experienced by students.

By featuring real stories and experiences, It’s Real conveys that depression and other mental health conditions are real illnesses that can be managed through specific treatments and interventions. It encourages students to be mindful of the state of their mental health, to acknowledge and recognize when they are struggling, and to take steps to seek help.

The It’s Real training features real stories and experiences through a 17-minute video presentation of six college students’ experiences. The film conveys that depression and other mental health conditions are real illnesses that can be managed through specific treatments and interventions. It encourages students to be mindful of the state of their mental health, to acknowledge and recognize when they are struggling, and to take steps to seek help.
