Dr. Henry Greenwell

A beloved member of the UofL School of Dentistry community was honored posthumously at the 109th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) in November 2023.

The Academy chose to honor two periodontics faculty members as Outstanding Periodontal Educator – including Dr. Henry Greenwell, who passed away in June of 2023.

A graduate of the UofL DMD class of 1977, Dr. Greenwell went on to become a dedicated 35-year faculty member of the University of Louisville School of Dentistry Department of Periodontics. He was a program director of UofL’s Advanced Education in Periodontics program for over 25 years until his retirement in 2021. In that role, Dr. Greenwell trained more than 100 students to become periodontists. Most of them are now Diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology.

During his career, Dr. Greenwell’s research into surgical practice had a significant impact on periodontal treatment. He developed and researched new surgical procedures and trained his students in these techniques. He was an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Board of Periodontics, and the American Dental Association.
