The Caldwell Chair was established by Joan Caldwell to expand the School of Medicine's efforts in women's health, clinical oncology and research through the recruitment of an outstanding gynecologic oncology researcher.
The late William Caldwell received his medical degree from the UofL School of Medicine in 1943. His wife, the former Joan Leslie, is an actress. Avid supporters of UofL, they founded the Southern California regional alumni club. In 1954 Cadlwell created the George P. Caldwell Scholarship Fund in the School of Medicine in honor of his father. Joan is an adopted alumna, and in 1988 her husband received thee University's Order of Merit Award.
