Norton Healthcare Inc. created the Garretson chair to support the advancement of medical research and education in the field of neurosurgery, particularly related to the treatment of spinal cord and head injuries. The gift was matched by the Kentucky Spinal Cord and Head Injury Research Trust.

The chair honors Henry D. Garretson, director of the Division of Neurosurgery from 1971 to 1994, and chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery until his retirement in 1997. Garretson was a leading neurosurgeon in the areas of arteriovenous malformations of the brain, epilepsy surgery and awake surgeries.

Norton Healthcare has been affiliated with the School of Medicine for more than 50 years and has generously supported many of its initiatives.
