Summer 2008
Gallows Humor
While most members of UofL's Class of 1958 strolled down memory lane during their recent 50th class reunion, one of their classmates most certainly was driving. Among Dr. H. Clarke Anderson's fondest UofL memories is motoring around campus in his used hearse—aptly dubbed Rigor Mortis.
Living Here
The number of students living on or near UofL's campus has grown from 1,800 to 3,300 in the last seven years. And that number will continue to grow. The university wants to add around 1,500 additional beds to meet anticipated student needs in the coming years. It all amounts to a major housing boom that is enhancing on-campus student facilities, making student life a richer experience and changing the culture at UofL.
Masterpiece Among Us
The first large bronze cast of Rodin's masterpiece, The Thinker (one of three done under the sculptor's supervision in 1903) eventually ended up on the campus of the UofL. Of 30 large bronze casts eventually made of the figure, the university’s is the very first, according to art historian Chris Fulton. He also thinks its one of the finest, and advocates for its much-needed preservation.
Cardinal Covenant
UofL's Cardinal Covenant program provides full scholarships to Kentucky's most economically disadvantaged students—those whose families live at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line. Last fall the university welcomed its first 169 Cardinal Covenant students. About half are from Jefferson County; the other half come from every corner of the state, from Ashland to Paducah. Another 100 students are expected to enter the program as freshmen this fall.
