UofL Repertory Company

Repertory company performed for school children

Every year, a troupe of Master of Fine Arts in Performance candidates from the University of Louisville Theatre Arts Department will perform two plays in rotating repertory for thousands of children, teachers, and other members of our community. Since its first performance on January 20, 1975, the Repertory Company has become one of the most visible aspects of the Theatre Arts Department at UofL, having performed for more than 100,000 people. The Repertory Company performances are offered at a very low cost for any school or non-profit organization in the Louisville metropolitan area, a unique service made possible by the generous support of the University of Louisville, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies, and the Theatre Arts Department. Through projects such as this, an urban university can serve its community as no other type of institution can.

Although area schools now schedule the vast majority of Repertory Company performances, the Company's tours have taken it to a remarkable variety of venues: classrooms, nursing homes, chapels and outdoor amphitheatres, the Governors Mansion, and the state prison. The Repertory Company production of The Glass Menagerie was performed at the Avignon Theatre Festival in France. It seldom, if ever, performs in a traditional theatre space.

Over 100 different performers have been members of the Repertory Company to date. Alumni of the Company are working as actors throughout the country or as teachers, lawyers, carpenters, and many other professions.

Adapted for the stage by Nefertiti Burton
Directed by Geoffrey Nelson

“The Dancing Turtle” is a folktale about a sad and lonely sea turtle who learns that the quickest way to happiness is by helping others.  Along the way, Turtle saves the life of a drowning sailor, who teaches her to dance, and she narrowly escapes being made into Turtle soup by a clever trick.  Originally told by the indigenous peoples of Brazil, “The Dancing Turtle” is now a popular folktale throughout South America.

Suggested for grades K-5

The Musicians of Bremen (Touring to begin October 17th)

The Musicians of Bremen perform on state

Adaptation by Melissa Shepherd and Company
Directed by Melissa Shepherd

The show is the sequel to “The Musicians of Bremen”, the traditional German Folk Tale, about a musical band of animals that find a new purpose for their lives and work as a team to defeat adversity.  Our play tells of another adventure with the musicians; inspired by a Russian version of the story, where the band meets a young man (Troubadour) and they travel and sing together.  The group finds themselves in trouble when they are banned from playing in town after the Troubadour and the Princess fall in love at first sight.   The Animal band help the Troubadour devise a plan to win the Princess and convince the King he a worthy Husband for his daughter.  In the end, the Musicians reputations are restored and the Princess and the Troubadour are united, after the team work of the Musicians pays off when they create a rouse to fool the King and his Valet.

Suggested for grades K-3
