About the Awards
Each year, the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning asks UofL students to nominate faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants who make a significant difference in their learning and intellectual growth. Nominees exemplify the true spirit of teaching and learning through the eyes of their students. Using an online nomination process that is open to all students at the end of fall and spring semesters, students submit nominations and comments about their favorite teachers.
Recognition
All faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants who receive nominations receive a formal letter of recognition from the Provost, along with a certificate, and are invited to attend the Faculty Favorite Reception, to be held on November 7, 2011, at the University Club.
All students who submitted a nomination are also invited to attend the reception to celebrate and honor their faculty favorite. Individual student nominations are also posted on the Faculty Favorite Awards website.
Additionally, faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants who receive the most nominations are formally recognized in a video presentation that premieres at the Delphi Center’s annual Celebration of Teaching and Learning. The video features the “top” nominees (instructors are eligible every four years) and a selection of students who submitted a nomination on their behalf. This year’s Celebration will be held on Friday, February 10, 2012 at Shelby Campus.

| Shawn | Parkhurst | Anthropology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Parkhurst is an amazing educator to whom I feel I owe a lot of my understanding of anthropology. In taking his History of Anthropology course, I have managed to learn more than in any course I have taken at the university. His instruction techniques reinforce learning in a way that forces the student to learn through constantly recalling material and building upon previous knowledge. Dr. Parkhurst's class has provided a lot of explanations for many questions I have held as an anthropology major and provided me with a lot of theoretical framework in historic social science discourse. Dr. Parkhurst is very personable and approachable. |
| Shawn | Parkhurst | Anthropology | College of Arts and Sciences | Exceptional, enthusiastic, and a wonderful professor! |
| Julie | Peteet | Anthropology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Peteet has helped me to go from being a good student to a great student. She has encouraged me to speak up in my classes and helped me to get over my fear of speaking up in class. If it wasn't for her support and direction, I would not have applied for a Fulbright ETA position and I would not currently be completing a senior honors thesis. She helped me to actualize my potential and greatly encouraged me to apply for these prestigious opportunities. Her care and attention to students' well-being and success is something to be admired. For example, she welcomed me into her home over the summer break so that we could begin discussing my thesis. Her classes have helped me to think critically and improve my writing skills. They have helped me not just learn, but apply this learning in projects such as designing a cultural orientation program for refugees. Dr. Peteet is truly an educator, engaging students in stimulating class discussions and critical thinking. |
| Frances | Purifoy | Anthropology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Purifoy's bio anthro course was the highlight of my semester, and I'm thrilled to be taking her primates class this spring. She stimulates class discussion and analysis rather than simply demanding memorization. Also, she was consistently aware of the students' needs and difficulties and shaped our coursework accordingly. The woman is just plain fun. |
| Christopher | Tillquist | Anthropology | College of Arts and Sciences | His enthusiasm is infectious. |
| Christopher | Tillquist | Anthropology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Tillquist has been by far the most knowledgeable, inspiring instructor I have had in my college career. |
| James | Alexander | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Alexander was very funny, enthusiastic, and extremely knowledgeable about the content he taught. |
| James | Alexander | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | Great professor that really engaged his students and made a very hard, challenging class enjoyable and interesting. |
| Ronald | Atlas | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Atlas has been one of the most stimulating professors that I have had the chance to learn from. His knowledge of the Microbiology field and his ability to teach the material far exceeded any expectations I had. I only wish that he taught more classes at U of L. I currently am working on my second degree in the accelerated nursing program, and throughout my collegiate experience, I have never been so inspired by a professor. |
| Ronald | Atlas | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Atlas is truly the most inspirational teacher that I have ever had in my academic career; including my grade school years. I have never had a professor that can walk into a classroom, talk for a full hour about something completely foreign to me, and still keep my attention the entire time, not to mention, have me walk out of class understanding and retaining everything that they just talked about. Dr. Atlas comes off to his students as a very knowledgeable professor, who also cares about his students' grades and that they actually understand the material. There is always time for questions during lecture, and Dr. Atlas is willing to go back over information with students who did not "get it" the first time around. I am greatly impressed with his credentials: working for NASA, being involved in the BP oil spill cleanup, etc., and the fact that he has a commitment to the field of microbiology outside of teaching it at the University of Louisville makes him out to be someone that his students admire and are grateful to have as a professor. I am so happy to have had Dr. Atlas as a professor, and I believe that it is important that he and the rest of the University knows what an impact he is making on his students! |
| Ronald | Atlas | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | I am a non-traditional student working on my second degree, and I can easily say that Dr. Atlas has been the best professor I've EVER had. He makes every lecture informative, engaging, interactive, relatable, humorous, and above all... ENJOYABLE. I can't remember the last time I ever felt anything other than happiness about a semester finally ending, but in this case, I honestly find myself feeling sad that Dr. Atlas will no longer be teaching me. If Dr. Atlas taught more lower-level courses, I would take them even though I don't need the credits. I came into his course fearing and dreading what I expected to be a very difficult and dry topic, and I am leaving it both extremely well-versed in and thoroughly excited by the field of microbiology. If I weren't so set on my current path, I would seriously consider pursuing a degree in microbiology based on my experience in Dr. Atlas's course. There truly aren't enough words to express how much I feel that this professor should be honored for his excellent work at U of L. |
| Ronald | Atlas | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | Professor Atlas's lectures are interesting and cover all subjects needed for his exams. He responds to e-mail questions in a prompt and informative manner. My lecture experience with Professor Atlas is one of pleasant entertainment and professional education. |
| William | Pearson | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | Professor Pearson has been a true motivator in the field of biology. I have truly never felt more motivated to pursue my career goals. During his lectures, I have never once felt bored or stressed out. He carefully and thoroughly explains his lecture material, provides insights, and lets you form your own opinions on topics. He is a great professor, and I feel that he deserves such a noticeable award. |
| Susanna | Remold | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Remold is fantastic! |
| Allison | Smith | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | She's a good egg :) |
| Joseph | Steffen | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Steffen is a great professor. I feel like I have learned more from his class than any other that I have enrolled in this semester. His lighthearted, jocular nature keeps the class's interest despite that the content may at times seem dry to some individuals. He is more than willing to help students understand biological concepts at any time during his lecture. I believe he truly enjoys teaching and being a milestone in the academic progression of many of UofL's pre-med students, such as myself. |
| Lindsey | Willett | Biology | College of Arts and Sciences | She was always prepared, her lectures made the labs so much easier to understand, and she was always funny and in a great mood. Her class was the best way to start the day! |

| Robert | Buchanan | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Buchanan is a phenomenal professor and mentor. He truly cares about his students, their well-being and education. His lectures are stimulating, and he encourages peer discussions benefiting everyone involved. As a working student, many obstacles can arise. Dr. Buchanan's guidance and leadership outside the classroom has had a profound impact on my academic and working careers. His initiative and personal commitment have been instrumental in helping me achieve my goals. |
| Teresa | Fan | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Fan has taught me more by being the mentor to my research project and teaching me skills essential to working in a biochemistry laboratory than possible in a classroom setting. |
| Gerald | Hammond | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | He made chemistry fun. His crazy analogies helped me to remember and learn organic chemistry. |
| Lenore | Hoyt | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | Coming from having no science background at all, I was certain I was going to fail miserably at chemistry. As it turns out, I'm doing exceptionally well due to the thorough and expert teaching Dr. Hoyt provides. She's by far the best teacher I've had in a very long time. |

| Mark | Noble | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Noble has been the most thorough teacher I have had thus far in my academic career, ensuring each student understands the material before moving on. In addition, his door is always open for a quick chat or a long discussion about life and/or chemistry! |
| Mark | Noble | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | Fantastic teacher, very approachable, and teaches chemistry in a way I've never seen. It is the best teaching I've ever witnessed. |
| Mark | Noble | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | His entire class was so good that at the end of the last lecture, the entire lecture hall applauded him. |
| Mark | Noble | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | He was very interesting to listen to, and he knew the material well. |
| Mark | Noble | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | He has a way of making all topics interesting and does in-class experiments for further understanding and to make class more entertaining. |
| Mark | Noble | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | He has great lecture skills, cares about his students, and always welcomes you in his office! A+! |

| Christine | Rich | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | She is a great teacher, very helpful, and also a good mentor to chemistry students. |
| Christine | Rich | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | Thanks for being an awesome teacher! Keep up the good work! |
| Christine | Rich | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | I learned more useful knowledge in her CHEM 527 class and in both her organic labs than I have in any other chemistry class I have taken. She explains the material well and her tests reflect how much you have learned. A great teacher! |
| Christine | Rich | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | Always had a lesson plan prepared for lecture, and her labs were efficient and informative. |
| Christine | Rich | Chemistry | College of Arts and Sciences | I have taken Dr. Rich for several class; both Honors Organic Chemistry labs, Separations and Spectroscopy, and Practicum in Chemistry Instruction. She is the best professor I have ever had in college and the best teacher I have ever had. She makes such an effort to ensure that every person in the class is learning. She is a difficult teacher, but I have learned more in her classes than I have in any of the other classes I have taken at this university. She is not just a good teacher because she is knowledgeable in her subject area, which she is, she is a good teacher because she cares and makes an effort to introduce new teaching methods into the classroom on a regular basis. |

| Thomas | Dumstorf | Classical and Modern Languages | College of Arts and Sciences | I'm a graduating senior, and I can comfortably say that Tom has been my favorite professor. I minored in Russian Studies solely so I could take his classes, and at this point, I think I've had him for all but two of my many, many semesters. He deserves recognition for being real, down-to-earth, funny, fascinating, and for clearly caring about his students and the culture he brings to us. |

It's obvious Prof. Groenewold puts a lot of time and thought into her lessons; she is genuinely concerned with her students' learning, which appears to be an underrated characteristic in professors of late. I so appreciated her as a teacher. |
| Monica | Krupinski | Classical and Modern Languages | College of Arts and Sciences | Professor Krupinski, as cliché as it sounds, changed my life. Her Cultures of America class was not at all what I was expecting. She made material that could have put us all to sleep in seconds more interesting than I thought possible by prompting class discussions and adding her own ideas to spark our own. She was the most genuinely real professor I've ever had; she let us know she was human in comedic and relevant ways to the class. Her class was the only one I never missed all semester. Professor Krupinski truly deserves this recognition as a great educator, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been beneficially impacted by her teaching. I would take any chance I could to take another one of her classes. |
| Monica | Krupinski | Classical and Modern Languages | College of Arts and Sciences | Monica is a wonderful teacher! After having years of Spanish, I decided to take German just for my own edification, and her style and demeanor have made learning a new language both fun and engaging. | Regina | Roebuck | Classical and Modern Languages | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Roebuck is the reason I have stayed a Spanish major. At a time when I wasn't sure if I could handle it, her class came as a breath of fresh air. While we covered challenging material, she presented it in a clear, helpful way. Not only have I learned a substantial amount from in-class lessons, but I also am required to work in a community volunteer position for her course. I have enjoyed it so much that even after my hours have been finished, I've continued my volunteering there. Lastly, as an advisor, Dr. Roebuck's guidance is irreplaceable. Helping me formulate plans for study abroad and future semesters, Dr. Roebuck helps me to evaluate all the options, and even when class sections change, she alerts me so that I can formulate my class schedule accordingly. |

Speech Competition. She is definitely my favorite professor this semester and really made a difference in my first year. |
| Ralph | Merkel | Communication | College of Arts and Sciences | One of the best teachers I've ever had at UofL and definitely the best one I had this semester. I took four classes with Professor Merkel and never felt like I was being forced to learn. Class always flew by, and I enjoyed listening to his stories about his actual experience in broadcasting, as well as the opportunity to go out and actually learn how to operate camera equipment and take on the duties of an actual journalist. Even though UofL doesn't offer journalism as a degree, I took every journalism class UofL offered. Professor Merkel taught each of these classes, and I couldn't have asked for a better teacher to lead me toward a career in broadcasting. I feel like I can go out and take on the world of journalism because I had the chance to learn from one of the best at UofL. |

Add to all of this her great sense of humor, and this is why Carol Mattingly absolutely deserves this nomination. |

| Mark | Parson | English | College of Arts and Sciences | Genuine, engaging, and fair. |

| Thomas | Mackey | History | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Mackey is an excellent professor in the classroom who keeps his students engaged and accountable for their work. My writing skills have improved astronomically because of Dr. Mackey's demanding curriculum and high expectations. He is also a great resource outside of the classroom. If a student ever has problems or questions, Dr. Mackey will take the time to answer any questions to the best of his ability and make sure that the students understand what he is telling them. Finally, Dr. Mackey is available as a pre-law advisor. I took advantage of his knowledge this year in preparation for entering law school. In summary, Dr. Mackey is a challenging professor who wants to see his students succeed, and I cannot imagine what my college experience would have been like without his support, insights, and advice. |
| Michael | Redman | History | College of Arts and Sciences | I really enjoyed attending his History 102 lecture. It's remarkable how intelligent he is, and his class was always engaging and interesting. |
| Bruce | Tyler | History | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Tyler has a very unique teaching style. In his US History course, we covered information that I have learned in political science classes, high school history classes, and other history classes at U of L, but this was the first time that I have actually retained the information. I am confident that this has little to do with repetition and everything to do with Tyler's teaching skills and techniques. |
| Pamela | Beattie | Humanities | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Beattie was an incredible instructor. She makes the material so fresh and interesting and always comes to class in a great mood. Her sense of humor made the class one that I enjoyed coming to every morning. |
| Roy | Fuller | Humanities | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Fuller is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate professors I have had the pleasure of learning from while at the University of Louisville. | Elijah | Pritchett | Humanities | College of Arts and Sciences | Great teacher! Makes class interesting and fun. |
| Michael | Williams | Humanities | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Williams has a way of engaging the class in the topics that he teaches. In my particular class, HUM 596, he encouraged lively discussion, participated in the discussions and questions, and presented thought-provoking views and commentary on what we were reading or watching on film. I looked forward to this class each time it met and eagerly anticipated what informative and fun things that he would interject. It was never dull or boring and always left me contemplating the broader implications of what I read and how they affected my thought processes and how I view the world around me. Given the opportunity, I would gladly take another course taught by Dr. Williams. |
| Michael | Williams | Humanities | College of Arts and Sciences | He's an amazing, devoted, insightful, funny, engaged, and inspiring teacher. |
| Elizabeth | Grossi | Justice Administration | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Grossi always makes time for her students despite her hectic schedule. Besides being a single mother and commanding officer in the military, she has been instrumental in providing assistance in students' research projects and continuing education. Additionally, she serves as the faculty for the alternative spring breaks in ISLP for trips to Belize, Cebu Philippines, and Botswana Africa. Her dedication to the educational experience of her students is unprecedented. |
| Theresa | Hayden | Justice Administration | College of Arts and Sciences | I learned a great deal from this instructor, and she was very helpful by showing us what we did wrong so we can learn from our mistakes instead of just simply marking something as a wrong answer! Thank you...you're the best! |
| Theresa | Hayden | Justice Administration | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Hayden can be tough but she is fair, and she goes out of her way to teach and help her students! |

This is how a class should be taught; he offered outside opportunities for students to ask him questions and provided the information to them in an efficient and easily understandable manner. Overall, he is a very effective professor. |
| Lee | Larson | Mathematics | College of Arts and Sciences | His ability to not only make sure that his students learn concepts, but also that they understand why those concepts are important and fascinating, is unparalleled. |
| Jiaxu | Li | Mathematics | College of Arts and Sciences | He was always enthusiastic and willing to answer any questions. I have never understood math as well as I understand the information I learned this year. He made calculus simple and enjoyable! |
| Jiaxu | Li | Mathematics | College of Arts and Sciences | He actually made calculus fun. I don't know if it was intentional, but he was so funny in class that I could actually pay attention and really learn. I almost took Calculus II next semester, even though I don't need it, just because he is teaching it. |
| Mary | Rising | Mathematics | College of Arts and Sciences | Great instructor! Very hands-on, challenging, motivating, and caring. |
| Susan | White | Mathematics | College of Arts and Sciences | Professor White successfully promotes learning inside and outside of the classroom. Not only does she teach a lesson, she also maintains an interactive class that is allowed to ask questions openly. She is willing to help inside and outside of class and is willing to come in to help students who cannot make it to her scheduled office hours. Professor White gives students outside sources with interesting topics related to mathematics via email or Blackboard, in order to enhance learning outside of the classroom with various applicable situations of math in the "Real World." |
| Susan | White | Mathematics | College of Arts and Sciences | She's incredible. When I was struggling in a class, she began to meet with me outside of set office hours up to three times per week. She honestly does what she can to help students succeed while passing on a passion and genuine excitement for Calculus 2. |

| Tomarra | Adams | Pan-African Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Tomarra cares deeply about ALL of her students. Personally, I feel that she has been there for me WHENEVER I needed her. Her help guided me through my many years of college and without both her help and God's, I probably wouldn't be attending school here right now. |
| Tomarra | Adams | Pan-African Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Adams continues to support and help students throughout their college career. She is a professor who believes in fairness, but most of all, providing knowledge and advice to her students. Dr. Adams not only shows this through her active work with the CONECT peer mentoring program, but she also demonstrates these qualities in the classroom as well as through her role of academic advisor. Personally, she helped me to devise an academic plan that helped me to be successful in reaching my senior year after having difficulties in past courses. Due to her time and commitment to me as a person first, student second, she has encouraged and inspired me to pursue my goal of working in student affairs. | Ricky | Jones | Pan-African Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Jones is a great teacher and is passionate about what he does, which makes learning an enjoyable experience in his class. He often has former students sit in on classes and that is a rare thing to see. It's almost sad to see the semester end because it was that great, and I learned so much. Dr. Jones is also a great mentor. Even if he's not your mentor, he encourages everyone to do their best and get the best out of their education, which is what makes him one of the best U of L instructors. What makes him the greatest is that he pushes you to push yourself and expects the best from you and challenges you to think beyond memorizing information. He is not just interested in you remembering what he said but your opinion about things and the fact that you are thinking. He stands out because you can see that he like to do what he does and that makes a difference in how a person teaches. He always give 110% because it is in him to do so. |
| Ricky | Jones | Pan-African Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Jones was a great teacher, very intelligent, and cares about his students. |
| Ricky | Jones | Pan-African Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | What makes Dr. Jones such an excellent instructor is that he demands, and expects, that the students in his classes are capable of greatness. We should always aim for excellence in our studies. He sets the bar high for us, and anything less than our best is not only selling ourselves short, but a disappointment for him. This is the kind of atmosphere and great expectations that all university classes should have, but is unfortunately rare to find! |
| Ricky | Jones | Pan-African Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | He is an amazing, inspirational instructor. He takes interest in each and every student he encounters. He takes time to give respect, which is sadly so rare. Dr. Jones is a phenomenal instructor and so wise. Though everyone may not agree with his radical arguments, he has the incredible courage to take a position and defend it with all his might. Too many instructors are afraid to do that these days. Dr. Jones certainly deserves this award. |

| Osborne | Wiggins | Philosophy | College of Arts and Sciences | He was very funny, understanding, and kept me interested in the class. |
| Osborne | Wiggins | Philosophy | College of Arts and Sciences | Honestly, if I could, I would re-nominate Ron Atlas from last semester... words can't express what an amazing educator I think he is. But since I didn't have him this semester, I'd instead like to nominate Osborne Wiggins. His medical ethics class was engaging and thought-provoking, his lectures were always interesting and informed by his real-world experiences in the field of medical ethics, and his deadpan sense of humor was a pleasure. |

| Julie | Bunck | Political Science | College of Arts and Sciences | I could write a book about why Dr. Bunck deserves this award, but I will leave you with three reasons. Firstly, she has a vast knowledge of her subject; secondly, she teaches and students learn; and lastly, she has a way of digging out the gold in her students and helping them find new motivation. |

| Julie | Bunck | Political Science | College of Arts and Sciences | School has always come easily to me, and I've never had much stretching to become a better student. At the same time, I've struggled with a learning disability and never felt I'd be able to reach a certain high academic level even with a lot of effort. Julie Bunck broke me of this thought process by showing her confidence in me as a student and calling me for what I was --an "A" student and capable of higher achievements. She has motivated and encouraged me to pursue my education and work hard at it. |

He works hard making sure his class is interesting with different lectures and guest speakers. He also has a lab called "Cafe," and he is also on the board at the Ali Institute. | Julia | Chariker | Psychological and Brain Sciences | College of Arts and Sciences | An infectious enthusiasm and ebullient personality. Julia Chariker brings a competence, verve, and passion to the instruction of Cognitive Psychology, which in my experience at UofL is rare and extraordinary. |
| Julia | Chariker | Psychological and Brain Sciences | College of Arts and Sciences | Dr. Chariker brings a level of excitement to each class that is infectious and has encouraged me to study and learn the subject matter. Dr. Chariker is always available to help with questions about the class and has been very open to sharing her knowledge in helping us to succeed in the course. It has definitely been a pleasure being in her class. I have learned the subject matter and feel I am one step closer to realizing my dream in psychology because of the knowledge she has bestowed. |
| Julia | Chariker | Psychological and Brain Sciences | College of Arts and Sciences | Julia is truly an amazing instructor. I have never had an instructor that I felt really cared about how well I did in the course. She jumped through hoops to help me with the material, and I feel that the grade I get in the course will be several letters higher than I would have received because of her. When I was looking for courses to enroll in next semester, I searched through her courses first. She is very deserving of this award. |

Not only did I have her last semester as a social psychology professor but as an advisor for an independent bystander research course this spring. She has pushed me to work harder as a student, while still being a mentor and a guide for my future college endeavors. I would recommend any student pursuing a degree in psychology, or any other degree, take one of her classes. It will impact their college experience. |

She is extremely knowledgeable in her field of study and research, and her teaching style allows for real learning in the classroom. In addition to be a wonderful teacher, she also seems to truly care about her students and the progress they make in her class. | Diane | Pecknold | Women's and Gender Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | When I think of the qualities I would like to have as a future professor, Dr. Pecknold instantly comes to mind. I have had few professors put more thought and effort into teaching as Dr. Pecknold. She completely counters the stereotype that professors care more about research than teaching. She is truly invested in making class interesting, relevant and useful for her students. Dr. Pecknold has made a significant difference in my life by providing constant support through a long, stressful process of applying to Ph.D. programs this semester and mentoring me as a future academic. As her teaching assistant, I have learned a great deal from her, both by watching her lecture in our undergrad class, as well as one-on-one guidance and training she has provided me. I routinely do not have to ask her for assistance or advice. She is honestly interested to know what I am working on and how she can help. Whether it is coming up with new ways to teach a concept to undergraduates, specific help with a class assignment, or bouncing off thesis ideas, Dr. Pecknold makes me feel like a supported and valuable member of our department and UofL overall. Dr. Pecknold is known throughout our department as being authentically interested in the lives of her students and invested in us getting the most out of the program. I cannot think of a quality that deserves a teaching award more than that, nor a professor that deserves the award more than Dr. Pecknold. |

I had taken all of my Women's and Gender Studies classes online before the Senior Seminar, and she made the transition to traditional classes so easy for me. She really seems to value student input on readings and assignments, and makes the most difficult readings seem clear and easy. I've learned a tremendous amount in her class. |
| Jennifer | White | Women's and Gender Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | The only teacher I had while being at UofL who made me think critically and really gave room for students to voice their opinion. Can't wait to take her again! |

| Linda | Shapiro | Educational and Counseling Psychology | College of Education and Human Development | Dr. Shapiro is an excellent teacher as she is a wealth of information, insight, and practical reasoning. Her Career Counseling class this semester gave me great insight into counseling and a holistic approach to working with all individuals who are transitioning into new work roles, life values, and experiences. While Dr. Shapiro's class was of great use to me, the individual attention and care that she gave her students was of supreme magnitude, especially to me. She acted as a calm and thoughtful voice of reason for me as I was going through my own job search process. In no way did she sway me to choose a certain route, rather she was about to offer unbiased advice which allowed for me to take more ownership of my situation. | Samuel | Stringfield | Educational and Counseling Psychology/Leadership, Foundations and Human Resource Education | College of Education and Human Development | Dr. Stringfield crafted ELFH 780 to enable 15 doctoral students to complete drafts of the first three chapters of their dissertations. His comments on our Dissertation Manifesto's, outlines, and each of our chapters gave us clear and positive feedback on how to elevate our work. In addition, each of us presented as if we were defending our proposals, allowing us to "test our skills in a safe environment." We also had the privilege of hearing dissertation defenses from former students. This tightly focused class has been instrumental in helping me to believe that I can complete my journey towards a PhD. |

| Mathew | Bergman | Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education | College of Education and Human Development | Matt has been phenomenally supportive and patient with my questions and my concerns. I am a returning student who has often found reasons to not stay and finish my schooling but Matt has been unwavering in his support for all of us in our class (ELFH 300). Many of us are returning students who have not been in school in many years so our faith in ourselves does not always match our abilities. Matt has made sure that every step of the way, we find a way to regain that faith. |
| Roger | Buskill | Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education | College of Education and Human Development | Roger is an example of an outstanding instructor. He is well versed in his courses, and he makes sure his students are successful. He uses critical thinking skills in unique ways and his classes are always interesting. |

This was the first online class that I had that I truly felt engaged, and I really learned a lot. Jason was able to communicate the information in a clear and concise manner. | Jason | Curry | Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education | College of Education and Human Development | Professor Curry was very motivating throughout ELFH 540 and suggested using an exit project that would be beneficial to me once I had graduated. | Kristin | Wilson | Leadership, Foundations, and Human Resource Education | College of Education and Human Development | William Ward once said that "great teachers inspire." He could have easily been speaking about Dr. Wilson. This semester has been terrible for me with regards to my personal life, and more than once I believed I would have to drop out or stay enrolled but do so only half-heartedly. Fortunately for me, Dr. Wilson's assignments and selected readings were so interesting and thought-provoking that I couldn't bring myself to do either. The questions she posed us were inspired. In the midst of a personal-life crisis, even with tears streaming down my face, I would find myself pondering our latest discussion board questions or paper prompts. As a result, I have produced some of my finest writing to date in her class this semester, which is something I would never have expected out of a semester I had originally intended to just muddle through. Dr. Wilson is an asset to the online ELFH program, and her course defies any stereotypes or generalizations about the academically inferior nature of online courses. This class was the most I have ever actively engaged in during my course work and I was glad to do it. |
| Peter | Alter | Teaching and Learning | College of Education and Human Development | Dr. Alter is very passionate about the subject he teaches. He exhibits this passion in his teaching. He has patience with his students and cares more about them understanding Special Education and applying it to their lives/future than about if they can answer a bunch of questions on a quiz. He always answers emails and student concerns. He excels in the area of teaching. |

Dr. Howell put so much effort to ensure that the class was meaningful and enjoyable. I could tell that she was very determined to make this class a success. I commend her for taking on this challenge and staying committed to it. Aside from her hard work and dedication, Dr. Howell is very personable, and her passion in teaching exudes every day. She was very caring and respectful. Every week I looked forward to attending her classes. One thing that made her stand out the most from my other professors I had this semester is that she made sure that everyone in the class was familiar with each other. She emphasized the importance of building a community in the classroom and the benefits of doing so. In the past I dreaded going to class because I did not know anyone. Now, I walk in with a smile and greet my fellow peers with a sense of familiarity. By far, Dr. Howell is one of the BEST professors here at the University of Louisville. Because of her passion, hard work, and bubbly personality, she deserves the Spring 2011 Faculty Favorite Award. |

| Robert | Pennington | Teaching and Learning | College of Education and Human Development | Dr. Pennington is one of a very few professors that I have had in my college career that has set high expectations for his students. He pushed me into the unknowns while exploring new concepts and ways of thinking. He went beyond what he had to do to meet his students' needs by making the class specific to our areas of interest and passion in education. I have never been more frustrated and stressed out during a class, but he was always there if any of us needed extra guidance. Even though this was by far the most challenging class I have taken, I have learned so much from it and only wish the rest of my course work required for my master's degree met up to the same level of instruction as Dr. Pennington's instruction did. Dr. Pennington is honest, caring, and most importantly, pushes the minds of his students that want and need to be pushed. Thank you for pushing my mind into areas I have never been. In the end, I learned more from your class than any other so far in my college career! |

| Leslie | Abramson | Louis D. Brandeis School of Law | Professor Abramson shows not only a strong commitment to making sure his students actually learn the material, but also to helping his students academically well beyond that for which his tenure contract calls. He is intelligent, humorous, and deeply interested in his students' well-being and advancement. | |
| Leslie | Abramson | Louis D. Brandeis School of Law | If the key criteria were only how an instructor makes a difference in the classroom, Professor Abramson would be a slam dunk. His class presentations, discussions, and assignments ensure student mastery of the subject. If a student does not succeed in his classes, the fault lies with the student, not the instructor. His classes are clear, thorough, and challenging. He pushes his students to earnestly think through questions and issues. However, when combined with his out-of-class support of students, Professor Abramson is the best professor I have ever encountered. His availability to students and the quality of the interactions is extraordinary. From helping to understand difficult concepts in class to assisting with scheduling, Professor Abramson demonstrates that he wants his students to succeed in his classes, in law school, and in their careers. For example, when the economy made summer jobs difficult to obtain, Professor Abramson initiated an alternative. He developed a summer internship program for students that allowed them to obtain substantive legal experience, along with academic credit. I have been fortunate to have many great professors in my undergraduate and graduate programs, but Professor Abramson outshines all of them. | |
| John | Cross | Louis D. Brandeis School of Law | Super intelligent and funny. Makes the most dense subject of the 1L year interesting by creating an awesome learning environment. | |
| David | Leibson | Louis D. Brandeis School of Law | David J. Leibson is the most thoughtful and reasonable person that I have ever encountered. He encourages contemplation and thoughtful reflection on the part of his students. He reminds me of the late Dr. Paul Weber. | |

| Charles | Baker | Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work | I have learned more about politics and policy than I did with my undergrad in political science because of Mr. Baker. He is a one-of-a-kind instructor and should be recognized as such! | |
| Charles | Baker | Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work | An amazing educator and social worker. Charlie is truly an asset to the University. The Kent School is very lucky to have him. | |
| Charles | Baker | Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work | Much of my educational experience has been what one would describe as the atypical experience. The instructor stands before the class and lectures; then the class in turn is expected to regurgitate the lessons. In Baker's class, the experience was much different. I was actually expected to think and use my critical thinking skills. Baker challenged me to see beyond the literature and thoughts of others to form thoughts of my own. He also empowered me to believe that I can make a social impact not only on those around me but on policy makers and the policies they form. | |
| Anita | Barbee | Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work | Dr. Barbee is one of the most delightful instructors I have ever met. She is extremely bright, funny and liberal! She is one of the most humble, yet open-minded individuals I have ever met. I appreciate those qualities in an individual; to have an instructor with those qualities is awesome! | |
| Wanda Lott |
Collins | Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work | She made herself available to meet with students whenever necessary. She taught in a manner that allowed open discussions for students' honest feedback, which has been rare with other instructors. | |
| Andy | Frey | Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work | By far the best teacher I have ever had. Dr. Frey goes out of his way to make sure his students understand course material and key concepts. He is very giving of his time and makes himself available to his students, should they need any assistance outside of the classroom. His teaching style is fun and refreshing, which makes me look forward to going to class. The classroom environment is one of collaboration rather than just lecture. | |
| Patrick | McKiernan | Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work | I refuse to miss any classes of Dr. McKiernan's. His classes are full of interactions, real-life situations, enthusiasm, and a wealth of knowledge. He is never boring. I can take his class at any time. What a great example!!! | |

| Jennifer | Brueckner | Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology | School of Medicine | She did an amazing job and was very instrumental in my learning head and neck anatomy. |
| Jennifer | Brueckner | Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology | School of Medicine | She rocks! |
| Nicole | Herring | Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology | School of Medicine | I am a first-year medical student, and Dr. Herring has made learning gross anatomy fun and interesting. She contributes time outside of class to assist the rest of my class in understanding a moderately difficult subject. While the entire Gross Anatomy faculty is phenomenal, I wanted to make sure that I mentioned that in my opinion Dr. Herring was most deserving of the nomination. |
| Raymond | Ho | Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology | School of Medicine | Dr. Ho provides lectures and guidance in his lab sections that balance a mastery of his subject area, a tasteful and controlled use of humor, and a solid dose of his personality--which is an asset both to his work and the university community as a whole. He is very approachable without being permissive or loose. He is very demanding of us while being neither unreasonable in his expectations nor unclear in his presentation of difficult material. He makes eye contact, smiles, and knows our names in the hallway as we pass to and from our classes. He is the first professor we as dental students have, and he is an incredible ambassador for the University to us as new professional students. Ask any dental student who has taken their Gross Anatomy or Head & Neck Anatomy with him, and he is by far the most popular teacher, even while teaching two of the more challenging courses we take in our program. He is course director for a course taught by numerous faculty as well, and Dr. Ho maintains a great tone/mood with his colleagues as well. They all seem to enjoy not only their work but also each other (and especially us!). I think his leadership helps tremendously in setting that tone. |

| Jeff | Falcone | Physiology and Biophysics | School of Medicine | Great lecturer and really cared about our understanding of the material. |

He also was not afraid to challenge our comfort zones by putting us in dramatic situations that directly conflicted with our personalities. |

None of his students are unchanged for the better as a result of his class, "A Course In Thriving", and I cannot thank U of L enough for offering this course. Professor Pickens didn't teach us so much as challenge us to teach ourselves, and as a result, this course is one we will all be taking (and enjoying!) for the rest of our lives. I want everyone to know how fantastic of an educator he is so that other professors can see how to make a positive impact on their students' lives and increase their love of learning and thinking (even when it's hard!) in the process. Thanks for having this award! It always feels good to get to show appreciation :). |

| Rosalie | Mainous | School of Nursing | Our evidence-based practice class lucked into having Dr. Mainous, the associate dean for graduate academic affairs at the SON. She suffered with a knee injury and pneumonia, but never lost her innately kind and joyful disposition. She taught without PowerPoint and shared invaluable lessons that are essential to a new grad nurse practitioner. | |
| Heather | Mitchell | School of Nursing | She was the most amazing instructor I have ever had. She took out the time to learn the names of the 60 people in my class. I have never had a college professor do that. Her lectures were interesting and she was very straightforward with the material she taught. Also, her tests were not tricky, but actually covered the material we learned in class and only the important things we needed to know. I wish I could have her as a teacher the rest of my college career. | |

| Somnath | Datta | Bioinformatics and Biostatistics | School of Public Health and Information Sciences | Dr. Somnath Datta is a quite strict and very nice professor. His classes are always challenging, interesting, and inspiring. He is a real educator who not only educates us in academic work, but also in personalities and characters. I am here sincerely and honored to nominate Professor Somnath Datta as my favorite educator for the fall 2010. |
| M. Caroline | Chan | Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences | School of Public Health and Information Sciences | Ms. Chan was new to teaching this year. It was really neat to watch her grow and find her strengths. I appreciated her openness and honesty, her flexibility, and her amazing knowledge. This is what made the class a stellar one for me and my cohort. I've learned much more about the topic than I ever thought possible. |
| A. Scott | LaJoie | Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences | School of Public Health and Information Sciences | Dr. LaJoie ran an amazing class on health communications. Not only did we get all of the lecture-type materials, but we spent a good portion of the time doing hands-on activities, like creating PSAs. I really liked the flexibility of the class. When the class got the idea to try their hands at a Twitter campaign for National Public Health Week, Dr. LaJoie really stepped up and helped us make that happen. So not only can our class tell you the theories behind the messages, we know how to apply it to an everyday environment. |
| Richard | Wilson | Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences | School of Public Health and Information Sciences | Dr. Wilson is passionate about his field and his teaching. He makes class fun and is a great asset to public health. |

| Dwayne | Compton | Admissions | Undergraduate Affairs | One word I can say about this man is "Limitless." Many people in the office, in the community, as well as Mr. Compton's wife and kids all wonder how he does it all! He is the Assistant Director of Admissions over Diversity recruitment, where he has numerous responsibilities from directing a team of full-time employees, student workers, a student organization, to recruiting high school students all over the bluegrass state and serving as a counselor and mentor to many current students who he helped get into college. He ALWAYS helps where he can and is never too good to do the grunt work. He is an amazing boss and friend. If there were an essay to write, I would and easily could. Thank you. |
| Willena | Sloan-High | Admissions | Undergraduate Affairs | Ms. Sloan-High has assisted me in several unforgettable ways. When I transferred to U of L, I received ZERO help and somehow I ran into Ms. Sloan-High. She never gave me the runaround, but it was up to me stay on track!! She genuinely cared for me, a total stranger that was young and totally lost on a big campus. I thank her, she deserves all the blessings that come her way! |
| John | Kleber | McConnell Center | Undergraduate Affairs | Dr. Kleber has proved invaluable to this University. I count him among the greatest men of our age. |
