Girls’ Menstrual Hygiene In Rural Nigeria
Anne B. Wallis, MHS, PhD, Associate Professor, Dept. of Epidemiology and Population Health, Director, MPH in Global Maternal and Child Health Concentration and Madeline Tomlinson, PhD(c), MPH, will discuss why women and girls face disproportionate economic, educational, and social burdens along with poor reproductive and other health outcomes in rural Nigeria. An important issue is menstrual hygiene, including taboos, missed days of work and school, access to feminine hygiene products, and private toilets. This mixed methods study assesses school girls’ knowledge and practices. The first phase of this study will inform a community-based intervention to improve menstrual hygiene; interventions will be evaluated to ensure effectiveness and sustainability.
